Dumb question - What do dark tarsels indicate? I'm assuming it has something to do with hormones and the rut getting closer.

Not a dumb question at all. The tarsal glands on the inside of the hind legs of a buck are used for communication. The tarsal secrets a thick lipid that sticks to the hairs on the tarsal. When a buck urinates he rubs the two glands together while the urin runs over them. The fatty liped and the urin is what causes the musky somewhat overwhelming smell. Is kind of a finger print to the heard.
