ok, what do you do with the loose ends and how do you hook it to your safety harness?

Go to a store that sells rock climbing gear like REI and tell them you need kernmantle rope. Check the tag on the end of the rope, it will tell you the safety rating. The rope will be dramatically over-rated for one person, but don't buy anything smaller than 3/8". The wider the safety rope, the more friction that is created if you fall. This results in less slippage when the prusick bites and reduces the overall length of your fall.

Just as an example...for fire department rope rescue a one-person rope must be rated at leastfor 4500#, two-person 9000#, etc.

TAKH

I just bought a climbing harness with the hip rings, climbing beltand a ring in the center of the back - I tied my own prussic hitch and clip it right to the rear D-Ring. I don't know about hooking it to the vest - the seams might fail in a fall. If there's any doubt in your mind, you should probably invest in something with a rear loop designed specifically to handle that kind of load - or give it a field test.

You'll need rope that withstand several times your bodyweight and has some elasticity, because if you are free-falling for a few feet before the rope tightens, the force required to stop your fallwill increase exponentially.

Good climbing rope is available at REI.com but I got mine at Tractor Supply - it's not necessarily made for climbing, not quite as soft, but it was a little cheaper and it does the job - you can still tie good knots with it. It's rated around 1/2 ton and consists of several materials- basically a cotton shell with nylon guts.
I am an arborist and would like to inform everyone that the min. line strength as required by OSHA is 5000lbs. I would recommend that you visit a store that specializes in climbing and repelling ropes. I prefer to get my ropes and harnesses at Vermeer Dealers. They are also an outlet store for sherrill climbing supplies.

Fall Guy makes a sweet device for climbing and descending. It works just like the seat belt in your car when you slam on the brakes. I'm thinking about buying one.

Instead of the knot, get look into getting a decent ascender. The rope you are looking for is called dynamic rope (it will strectch up to about 25%). Check this link for a bunch of info:

I promise you we will be reading about somebody falling again this year. Be careful and protect yourself from the time your feet leave the ground.
