Default a thought on scrape hunting

I read this once but have not tried this out yet. i was wondering if anyone else had. the article was about hunting scrapes but having little activity during the daylight hours. the author stated he had changed his luck by finding the biggest scrapes most likely used by dominant bucks and hunting them when it has been raining alot and the rain is just ending. he claims since the rain has stopped the dominant bucks are eager to refreshen up the scrapes so chances of hunting him in the daylight hours are increased. sounds like it could work. im thinking pre rut is probably the best time when they are not yet hooked up with does yet.

Makes sense to me. Ive always had great luck when its lightly raining or misting out.

I was also told that the little bit of rain would take your scent straight to the ground if there wasnt a strong wind. Anyone heard this before?

Sounds like a plan Don. Thanks for the heads up. It's all in the details, isn't it.

I've hunted a lot of scrapes over the years. To be honest, they come up dry more thansuccessful. As you say, pre rut is good. BUT, don't overlook post rut. During the rut the bucks have all the does they want and tend to ignore freshening their scrapes. After the big flurry of the rut with most does bred and pickings slim, the bucks still raring to go start advertising at their scrapes again trying to find that last doe to be bred. Post rut is also great.

Funny you bring that up. I posted about this very topic a few weeks ago. I read the article as well, and actually took a buck over a scrape less than an hour after a nice rain. Coincidence?? I don't know...but read the same article.

I had read this article also and if I remember correctly the author wanted to hunt immediately after a rain ending because in his opinion bucks would be freshening their scrapes.I can't vouch for that strategy,I don't know if it has merit or not.I do know that there is absolutely increased deer movement as a storm front is lifting.
If I can find big scrapes in conjunction with funnels, those area's will get my attention, especially so if there is a doe bedding area near by.

Well I hope you all realize that hunting ANYWHERE right after a rain is always a great time, especially if it's been a real drencher and is a little cool. Doesn't have to be a scrape, anywhere and you'll probably see more activity than you would after 3 days of same-O same-O
