Contest and filmed hunts.
I got off the phone with HNI president Todd Graf and he's asked us all to step up and film our hunts. I ammended the contest rules per Todd's request to award additional points for submitted filmed hunts for HNI's up and coming filmed hunts area. So if you have partners or opportunity to film your hunts, it could help put your team over the top. I know how hard it is to film hunts, I've been doing it for years and alot of you can attest this as well so I think it's a great idea and generous of Todd and HNI to offer us even more incentive and area's to share our passion...personally I love filming hunts and for me, it's another way to capture my passion to enjoy later on. I'd love to see some of your hunts and shortly, we'll be able to share them here on HNI.
SO, good luck to everyone this year, I hope you have a successful season plus, I hope you capture it all on film. |
RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
Is this optional or have to????
|
RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
It's only an option, no one has to do anything other than enjoy your hunt....:D
|
RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
Sounds like a good idea..... have to get a friend to film me then! Or me film him! [8D]
|
RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
Doesn't sound like a bad idea. It will be my son's first year bow hunting, so I will be holding a camera more then my bow. I don't think I will have any problem getting video.
|
RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
One question. Does the video have to be of the deer that is taken, or ofthe hunt period?
|
RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
Great idea...can't wait .
|
RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
Ron, of course the shot is the most important part of any hunting video but when talking with Todd and I know as well that when hunting alone, it's the most difficult part of the hunt/shot.....and being an avid bowhunter and compassionate individual it is more important to me that you concentrate on the shot for a quick humane kill, after all, that's what we are there for, so with that being said, if you can get all the footage you can up to that point and then concentrate on the shot.....
|
RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
I would love to film some of my hunts. I wish I had a video camera with me some last season. I think I may buy a video camera before season and give it a shot.
Now that I think about it, its just more crap to carry into the woods though.:(It would be worth it though. |
RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
If a team doesn't have the capabilities of filming their hunt then this would be a dissadvantage. Perhaps a special award for the best video of a hunt but not let it give the whole team bonus points?
|
RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
I saw a great product that would help with filming your own hunt. The lensattaches to the bill of your cap and you hook it up to your camcorder with a cable so the camera sees what you see. The only problem, I don't remember where I saw it. It could eliminate 1 scentbomb from your stand.

On the lighter side of things, now Rob, are you givin' me an excuse to go out and buy one of those stabilizer mounted bow cams? Oh, the wife will just love you..and so will the folks at Cabelas' Visa. ;) |
RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
I like the idea of just having the best hunting footage award, like the big buck award.
|
RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
Great Idea - Wish I would have thought of it ---- oh wait, I did last year:eek:
|
RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
I agree with some of the others, not a bad idea, maybe make it a seperate category. I don't understandthe bonus points theory, P&Y isn't going to tally a few extra points on it if we get it on tape....are they?;)
|
RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
I'm all about video taping hunts but I don't think it's fair to give extra points to coincide with the bowhunting contest. Some people don't have cameras. Also, there's already a ton of people signed up for the contest that did sign up with the understanding that the rules were plain and clear. I don't think it's fair to change the rules now and add bonus points.
|
RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
Quit whinning already. The point system is a great incentive for people to film their hunts. I guess I will have to replace my camera now.
|
RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
Showmy hunt from 2003? My only one on film so far.
|
RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
Contest rules? Im slow today long night of 3rd shift. Thanks

RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
Rob/PA, Can it be any hunt for the upcoming season or does it have to be of the animal that is being entered into the contest?

RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
Ive passed this suggestion in the Contest thread, but i'll put it here also:
I think it'd be a great way to earn some points for taking a doe on camera. Afterall its a bowhunting contest, not a P&Y contest. It doesnt have to be that many points either, only like 10-25. Also Id like to address the "unfairness" issue, the teams are randomly drawn so it will be fair, if you want to complain about this being unfair then you better complain bout the fact that some people live where they are more likely to kill a bigger buck. What if one team was all from pike county or something like that? Strickly the fact that the teams are randomly drawn takes care of this. If you would like, we could set a limit to the number of points earned by "filming", say 100 or 125. |
RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
Okay, not that I will be filming my hunt, I don't have a decent camcorder and hunt alone, but lets say I don't want to botch up my hunt by messing with a camera, and get one on the ground, that buck is scored because it's my first buck. What if I take a second buck and film that one? Can I suppliment the score of my first with a video of the second?
edit: Sorry, didn't see the last couple of posts in this thread, it looks like this question has already been asked... |
RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
Also who will receive the point the cameraman or the shooter or both. I hunt with another contestant so if we were to film a kill then who's team gets the points???
|
RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
If I shoot a Javelina in velvet......and then subsequently re-capture footage of a trespasser I spined back in '03 (through the modern day miracle of digital re-mastering)......can my team and I claim bragging rights and earn "style" points........even get matching fletchings!!??
You've asked for it...................here they come........ (jeff):D |

RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
Guys, I ammended the rules to lesson the points for a video to 10 points per member because 25 seemed high..25 inches of antler is hard to come by and this way with 10 points each member, x 10 members, if all score on video (aint gonna happen) a total of 100 points (inches) is max....not really a relistic deciding factor but one never knows. Videoing a kill is very difficult and I say that with years of practice/attempts...if one is taken, the bonus points are earned, not given.
I don't like the idea of bonus points for doe...it's not a fair contest when many won't have a doe tag, all have buck tags...I know I know unless it's an earn a tag...complications...it would be tough to come up with a fair system for amount of tags, any tags, no tags...like myself, I may not buy a doe tag. |
RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
Are there any penalties for not filming your hunt? Although I own a decent camera, I've been trying to film myself taking a nice buck for three years and have not done so. I've taken 4 nice bucks during that time. It seems that when it gets right down to it, I leave the camera home when I'm on to something that requires stealth and not a lot of cumbersome equiptment. I'll admit, I'm a bit paranoid and superstitious when it comes to hunting these deer. How important is filming this hunt? My record isn't too good![:-]

RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
I don't participate in these contests' because of all the rederick assciated with them such as this. A contest to award the taking of the biggest buck and now filming has entered the picture. I can see it now, the biggest buck actually loosing out to a smaller one because the smaller one was caught on film[:'(]. Sounds like a promotion for a sponser to me.

RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
GregH, no, there is no penalty and no prerequisite to film a hunt, it's a total volunteer thing. All it comes down to and Rick this might interest you is HNI is launching a video area for members to share thier own hunts. Members such as yourselves will be able to upload and share you videos with your friends here on HNI as well as anyone else interested in watching. I for one am excited about this, I already have 12 whitetails taken on film with various shooters including all size bucks and does alike not to mention a dozen gobblers with various shooters. I love being the camera man and would love the format to show my footage.
Big buck contest have been around longer than I've been hunting and I'm no spring chicken, course I'm not as old as you Rick ;) but I don't see big buck contests being detrimental to our contest....everyone shoots to each thier own...Including me, I shoot the buck that best suits my wants be it size, somthing special about the hunt or in the last two seasons if you remember, the uniqueness of their racks....or lack there off. ;) The contest is and will be about having fun. You don't have to do anything you don't want to do. If you don't want to film a hunt, DON'T...if you don't want to taken the biggest buck....DON'T..all bucks count.....if you don't want to participate in the contest...DON'T...if you do...by all means have gun DOING IT....:D Remember to have fun....my hunt comes down to me and me only and if I help my team with a nice bucks score...good for my team....if I catch it on video...good for me, I love it and I will want to share it with you, you too Rick, I hope you enjoy my footage...I sent a tape out to Greg / MO of all our kills, and some miss's...and he seemed to really enjoy it..perhaps he'll forward a copy to you. Have fun and have a great season, in or out of the contest.... |
RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
Rick, if I'm not mistaken, the big buck contest was a side contest started by a non affiliated member and he offered prizes out of his own shop. It wasn't necessarily part of HNI or the bowhunting contest.
I personally like the idea of the filmed hunt. I was trying to get some people to video their hunts last year for the DVD but as you might imagine -- I didn't get any. (save 1 non harvest video) |
RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
HuntingEd brought up a great idea, I think, about does....how about bonus points strictly for kill footage on does...? I'll make a proposal thread.
|
RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
i'm in end!!! who i send it to once done?
|
RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
Rob, my first reaction to this entire deal was negative. But you know what, I've thought it over quite a bit and I like the idea. It does NOTHING but positively promote the sport of bowhunting and pulls us all together. The past contests have always been fun, but man alive! Canyou guys believe how much fun this could be if we got to SHARE each others hunts??!!! We would have so much to talk about, it wouldn't even be funny!!
Let's do it!! Let's award some bonus for does, too. Hell, I don't even video, or really have the capacity too, but I would sure enjoy seeing the footage of those that do!!!! Enough already!!!! Bow season just needs to get here!!! 45 days, not that I'm counting....... |

RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
Hazon7, you are correct and it was ArticBowman that started it years ago.
Rob, I respected your reply till you threw in that age thing:D. Just kidding. I will enjoy the videos just as much as the next guy I'm sure. Like Couger, I just don't think it belongs where it is being put but alas, I'm not even in the contest[:-]so who am I to question it. It's a big hit here at HNI, I'm just not one that partisapates in it, that's all. No bards here towards anyone that does either. Enjoy it, have fun with it, I just hope it doesn't cause a rift in the ranks if the scoring is effected by a video and someone feels cheated because thier team didn't film the hunt. |
RE: Contest and filmed hunts.
I've thought about that too, I'm trying to think of a win/win for everyone....how about we hold a video contest within the contest....go strictly total inches of antler in one contest, same team for video's, seperate contest.....?
