how many noobs this year
#8
I'm considering myself a newbie this year. I'm getting excited about archery hunting for elkwhich is only 7 weeks away! I've been tuning my bow and practicing like a madman lately to make sure I'm ready.
Actually, I did archery my first year of hunting (1989) but failed miserably due to my own ineptness both in understanding animal behavior and in archery ability. Since that time I have used a rifle and after a couple "learning years" have done pretty well.
I won't soon forget that first archery season, where I was presented a broadside shot at a doe at30 yards. Sensing my lack of ability, she patiently waited for me to load up an arrow and fling it in her general direction. When it hit the ground just under her front legs she looked down, shook her head and said "aw, what the hell, why don't you take another shot at it. Oh, and by the way, you might want to consider using the 40 yard sight pin this time".
Thanking her for her kind understanding of my general predicament, I loaded up another arrow and shot again. The both of us watched that arrow heading for the sweet spot when all of a sudden, a twig came from out of nowhere and deflected the arrow to the side, missingagain. "Listen, I've got some errands to run so I'll see you some other time", she said. I shook my fist and yelled "some day I'm going to murder your progeny", and then we parted ways.
On the way back to camp I tripped and fell into some blackberry bushes that scratched my body up pretty good. My hunting partners think I got into a scrap with a bear while trying to go potty...so let's just keep this our little secret, ok?

This will be Wendy's (kodiakswildside) first year with a bow. I challenged her to quit cheating by using the rifle. She already shoots everything with her .35 Whelen at less than 30 yards so she's up for the sneaking part. Now she's just got to get that 50# bow (AK minimum) back without getting busted.
