RE: famous hunting myths
Great thread. Here's a few more:
1. Deer"go" nocturnal when pressured. 2. Hunting is poor when the moon is full. 3. Deer don't move around while it's raining. 4. Scent Lok clothing really works. 5. The size of therack indicates a hunter's skill. 6. Skilled hunters don't makemistakes. 7. Trophy bucks only live in remote areas. |
RE: famous hunting myths
A whole bunch of the stuff posted on here aren't myths...
Many of the things put are much more likely to occur than yall are giving them credit for...and by all means don't reach "mythical" standards. Man oh man. Of course...there's always an exception to any rule... |
RE: famous hunting myths
If we believe something is true, we tend to see evidence to support our beliefs. I hope nobody's getting insulted here because there's a benefit to be had and a lesson to be learned in this thread. Thinking outside of our boxes canand will improve success.
Example - I once bought into the myth thatyou have to hike milesawayto find trophy mulies. And sure enough, I was finding a few out in the high lonesomes from time to time. But there was this old boy that year after year was getting monster bucks and I knew he wasn't physically able to walk more than a few hundred yards. So with the help of a bottle of good single malt, Igot his secret from him one evening. He was hunting the apple orchards just above town and setting up not 100 yards from his truck. |

RE: famous hunting myths
Okay, just for the record, I can't speak with any authority about white tails. I've never hunted them and shouldn't assume that what holds true for mule deer also holds true for white tails. Sorry.
But yes, as far as mulies go, they are definitely myths. #1 even has research to prove deer are naturally nocturnal - diurnal, actually. Hunting pressure doesn't make them that way. |

"I can't hit beans on the target range, but I'm deadly in the woods."
"I wouldn't be caught dead in the woods with anything less than 70#, but it's OK for my wife/kid to shoot 40# because that's all they can pull." "I wouldn't be caught dead in the woods with anything less than a 30-06, but it's OK for my wife/kid to use a .243 because that's all the recoil they can handle." "A 30-30 rifle is too wimpy for hunting, but a .44 mag is a macho hunting pistol." |

"heavy bullets will cut straight through brush where as a 223 wont hit the boradside of a barn through leaves."
