Deer-e-ere?
Anyone see this new product to help with field dressing yet??? It's this tool that's supposed to make getting the anus, etc. out much easier when field dressing. According to the copy in the sportsmansguide catalog I got:
"Just stick the Deer-e-ere⢠in and twist out your animal's anal canal...cut, tie off and the job is done." I've also attached a photo at the bottom. I guess I've found it to be one of the least pleasant and trickier tasks of the whole process but not difficult enough for a separate tool just for that. Who knows though? Anyone use this before? If I get one, I'll have to keep it in the utensils drawer in the kitchen next to the melon baller and such.:D ![]() |
RE: Deer-e-ere?
this sounds gross but id like to see a video or something to see if its worth the money. If its *snap* your done then id prob get it but an extra 2 min or so cutting it out isnt the worst thing ive done.

RE: Deer-e-ere?
I too would like to hear if this thing works. ha, ha

RE: Deer-e-ere?
Now let me get striaght you put this in the deers butt twist and pull, then you cut.
I think I'm missing something here! How much does that anus gutter cost. |
RE: Deer-e-ere?
I don't need one...I bone out my hams or seperate the ham at the ball joint with a knife...By doing so I also eliminate the need to remove the bladder...Don't know about you but I ain't fooling around in that area!!!:D

RE: Deer-e-ere?
There is a video on their website. I don't like how the guy does it. I suppose it looks like it works, but after pulling out the last foot of the intestine that turns into the anus, he cuts it off at about 6 or 8 inches...then pushes it back in! I think I would tie it off before doing that personally.

RE: Deer-e-ere?
Definately looks easier with that.

RE: Deer-e-ere?
You know I used to split the pelvic bone when gutting until I was taught not to an ring the anus, since then I've never had a problem with ringing the anus for removal. That's just something else to carry and lose. It might work, it might not, it's not for me.

RE: Deer-e-ere?
Rob, that makes a lot of sense. So basically, you just split the pelvis and then cut the intestines away once the pelvis is open? Would be less annoying than using the tip of your knife to ring the anus and avoid puncturing anything in the process. I had never thought of that. Good point. This is the method I will use this season.

RE: Deer-e-ere?
Deer-e-ere
Sportman's Guide has it for $10($9 for club) + shipping , the mfr sells it for $15 + shipping , and by the time they hit Wally World it'll probaby be $5 . It looks gimmicky , but it would speed the process and help with sanitation , so why not ? I gut mine at home , so it isn't like I would lose it or drop it from my stand . |
RE: Deer-e-ere?
Chukar, I don't split the pelvis at all anymore. I gut the animal, ring the anus and the anus comes out with the intestines. This way you don't have to split the pelvis and possible contaminate the meat. Not splitting the pelvis also helps in dragging, the legs won't fling all over.

RE: Deer-e-ere?
Gotta see if it works, haven't had any problems ringing the anus with a sharp kife though. Now if you could stick it in twist it and the whole innards would come out that would be cool! Lol.

RE: Deer-e-ere?
Whoops. Read your post a little too quickly. I see. I did't split the pelvis on either of the does I got last year. My first two deer ever so I was a little aprehensive about cutting into something while ringing it. But that's basically what I did, ring it, tie it off and pull it out through the chest cavity, etc. Will probably still do it that way this year. I had a guy telling me it was a must to split the rib cage open too for air flow but I didn't do that on either one either. How can air not get in through the large hole you've just created? It was very hot the day I got my first one in October, though, so I iced it down as I couldn't get it to the processor until that night.

RE: Deer-e-ere?
I'd only be concerned with splitting the pelvis or rib cage after I get the animal out of the woods. That way you can properly care for it.

RE: Deer-e-ere?
the owner of my local pro shop says that this is going to be one of the best new tools in hunting

RE: Deer-e-ere?
The vedio showed how it worked. I'm getting one. It worked slick as a whistle. Carving out the ole bung hole has never been alot of fun.
|
RE: Deer-e-ere?
Aw Man just saw the video, think I'll stick with the old way.
Thanks for sharing |
RE: Deer-e-ere?
Yeah it looks pretty slick but in the video he doesn't tie off the intestine. Doesn't that defeat the whole purpose. I'd try one but I'll tie it off before I make the cut!

RE: Deer-e-ere?
Slightly off topic, but how do you all handle the bladder? It seems that no matter how careful I am, invariably I end up spilling some. I've heard that some people use a small needle to withdraw the urine prior to cutting.
|
RE: Deer-e-ere?
Really haven't noticed a problem with that.
|
RE: Deer-e-ere?
Bone 'em out where they drop, drop the meat in a pack and hike home. No need to mess with the guts.
|
RE: Deer-e-ere?
Never seen anything like it.I just split the pelvic bone with my saw on my leatherman and use a knife.
