Face camo,paint or bare skin?
I use a tight fitting camoface mask myself but alot of these people on
tv and videos go bare faced and no gloves. It makes me think movement or the lack of it is more important then the camo on the face and hands. Whats your stand on this? |
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
Those deer on TV are used to seeing bare skin when the ranch hands come out to feed them. And sometimes I think pet them also.
I use a full mask when I can stand it, and paint if its too hot for the mask. And I agree about movement or lack there of being more important. |
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
if i use anything its face paint the last 3 elk i shot with a bow were bare faced i have tried masks but they interfere with my anchor point
|
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
I use face paint during the september season because its so hot out and a mask in the November/December season because of the cold.
|
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
Depends on where I'm hunting from... In a tree, amask or paint.. in my ground blind I just wear a smile. :D
|
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
Those guys on TV not wearing a face mask of any kind are hunting deer in very low pressure situations. If you'll notice, they also hunt quite low to the ground w/out much cover. In high pressure areas, you'll never get away w/ that.
That being said, I've used face paint before w/ success. The only thing I don't like is removing it. Sometimes you've gotta scrub pretty hard. 90% of the time I wear my ASAT full head mask. Yes, I know......how do I feel my kisser button? Simple. I don't use one. |
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
I use masks and paint depending on my mood or both
|
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
Mask only. Never tried paint, though. I always figuredI'd forget it and look like a retard the next place I went.
|
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
Paint for me.
Masks get in the road and I fear the string ripping it off my face. It probably will never happen but I dont take the chance. |
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
I'll use face paint most of the time but in the winter months, I'll wear a mask.
|
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
Face paint for me.
|
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
i myself sometimes use a mask for early season but usually not, and for later on when its colder i use one just to stay warm, but usually pull it down when deer are coming
|
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
I use a face mask. I have a light one (mesh like) for the warmer early fall hunting and a fleese one for when it gets colder.
|
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
For whitetail treestand hunting, I use a Scent Lok liner headcover with 3-D leaf attached (my wife customized it with a little sewing). The only part of my body exposed are my eyes, even in the hot summer days oflate August when the the opener to whitetail season begins. The liner system breaths well and is very light.
While bowhunting elk on the ground when its hot, I roll theScent Lok liner head cover up onto the top of my head since it would be to hot while hiking around with it down. When I set up on a bull that is closing in its easy topull it down over my face. |
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
For what it is worth I wear gloves & nothing covering my face for the last 2 seasons. I have my hat pulled low and generally have a high collar so part of my face is covered anyway. If I am in sub-zero then I will have a facemask of course....my reasoning is there is much more to be concerned about with breaking up my outline than a deer spotting my partialy exposed mug...
|
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
I use a light weight mesh mask in warm weather and a full length camo ski mask in cold weather. But that was when I was using a peep. Now that I'm peepless, I don't know how that would affect my kisser button / anchor point.
When I'm staring eye to eye at a deer at 15 yards I like my face covered up. Does the camo paint have a scent that deer can smell? |
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
I use Hunter Specialtieseasy off facepaintand it works great.

RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
I use a $3 face net from Walmart. Plus it helps when sitting inside the DB blind.
|
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
I wear a face mask 75% of the time. The other 25% of the time i wear my hat low with my coat collar pulled up and that seems to work just as well as the face mask.
|
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
100% of the time I wear bear skin. No real reason beside what is comfrontable in. Somtimes I wear the half neck warmer when it is cold.

RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
Beard.... but it's getting so much white in it, I'm gonna have to start using Grecian Formula or shoe polish or something.[8D]
|
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
ORIGINAL: Arthur P Beard.... but it's getting so much white in it, I'm gonna have to start using Grecian Formula or shoe polish or something.[8D] I still have bunchmore years before its white white but my kids remind me every year I'm getting more grey. It's bad when your customer notices Grecian Formula. |
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
I use cake makeup and face paint stripes. It's about the cheapest way to go, and I've found it to be the best. No glare what-so-ever, and will last in rain and through persiration. Easy on-easy off. Here is a pic of me after I dragged this deer 3/4 mile.

RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
For the last 3 years I've went bare faced.
|
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
If you are treestand hunting and using any of the (2) popular brands of camo, face paint is the last thing you need to worry about. The small area of skin on the face is nothing compared to the rest of you're body in that blob camo! Remember, they are looking up at you, what is the back-drop? It's not what they show you in the advertisements!
|
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
For you guys having trouble taking off face-paint, baby-wipes work pretty well.
Also, use black paint on your features that stick out, like ears, nose, etc, and lighter colors (like green) on deeper parts of your face, like right under your eyes and such. Helps to flatten out your face. |
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
Face paint or mask. Face paint is definitely more trouble free and gets in your way less.:D
|
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
Spand-o-flage face mask - tight fitting and does not interfere with anchor point or bowstring.
|
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
I use a cheap face net from Wal-mart like Greg mentioned while its warm and bugs are out than I have a fleece mask for colder weather, however I have to pull it down under my chin when I shoot.
|
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
i use masks simply because i dont want to have to scrub for hours to get that stinkin paint off.
Just my $0.02 |
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
![]() I wear this mask most of the time I also use paint in hotter weather |
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
![]() It is easy to pull out of the way. The beard probably helps a little too. |
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
I wear a scent lok hood most often, the brim of my hat is pulled down low as well.I actually pull the hood back behind my ears so that it doesn't effect my hearing.
|
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
![]() That's another reason I like paint better, it doesn't effect my hearing as much as a mask does. |
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
Paint, I wear glasses and don't like to wear a mask with them!
|
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
hatchet jack, I'm with you on the face paint.
A good way to clean the paint off is to wet a hand towel, or wash clothand place dishwater soap on one corner, both sides. It cleans it completly off. And, because you have just one corner saturated with soap you can use the other corners to wipe the soap off and have enough towel left to do an evening hunt. *See Avatar... |
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
Movement has cost me more shots than anything else . I normally wear a facemask and gloves for concealment .
|
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
Used to use burnt cork, but that got messy. I use a face mask now.
|
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
You don't have to scrub off half the hide on your face to get the face paint off. Take a jar of cold cream and some paper towels. Slather on some of the cold cream and let it sit for a minute or two, then wash it off with a few damp paper towels.
And it leaves your skin so nice and fresh![8D] |
RE: Face camo, paint or bare skin?
I'm gonna try the cold cream this year. I have another tip to remove it though. Carry a soapy face towel in a plastic bag and leave it in your vehicle. If it's cold out, while the vehicle is running warming up, place it on a warm air duct and it'll warm up real nice. I used to use makup removing pads, but they are full of alcohol and really mess up my eyes. Not good if I have to drive.
