Hey Dawg
There's a lot of stand's out there as you know but let me tell what I use.
I have 3 diffrent lock-on stand's, 1 is a GORILLA ,the second one is a RIVERS EDGE & my third one is an Alpha LONE WOLF.
I like & use them all season long the Gorilla is nice & light to carry in & the Rivers Edge BigFoot model is a little heavyer but comfortable but what I like about my alpha is that you adjust the seat to fit the angle of the tree.
They have pretty big platfroms.
With so many products in the markek you just gotta shop around & get what your comfortable with.

I like lock ons! After sliding down a tree to the ground (thank god no serious injuries) you can take them climbers and put them where the sun don't shine.
You didn't happen to be in a WET pine tree, were you?

mobowhuntr,

That wasn't an older Loggy Bayou by chance was it? There are plenty of good climbers today that are plenty safe, and bite really well into the tree.

I have both types of stands and primarily use the lock-on type because of the versatility. I really wanted an Ol' Man climber for years ( I got started a long time ago with one of the old Baker climbers). However, after I finally broke down and bought one, I found that it actually takes me longer to get set up in it than it does to screw-in steps and position my fixed position stand. I like using large tree with lots of limbs for cover -- can't do that with my climber. And, as for safety . . . I have taken a fairly rapid descent in my climber and have had friends do the same. The fixed position stands have yet to fail me.

Lock ons have their place and are effective. I prefer the climber for several reasons. One, it's easier to stay strapped in going up and down. With lock ons you'd have to buy a lot of descender ropes etc to accomplish that. Two, no one can hunt my climber. If I leave a hang on in the woods it can always be hunted without me knowing or worse yet stolen. I would think in Texas live oaks etc a lock on would almost be mandatory. Not to many trees to use a climber on.
