RE: Mule deer vs. whitetail deer

I would think Mulie would be harder due to the longer shots mostly and the fact that typically a whitetail might be easier to pattern. But, sadly I have never hunted mule deer so definitely am no expert.

RE: Mule deer vs. whitetail deer

Getting a shot at a trophy quality mulie is much tougher for one main reason, shear numbers. There's simply not as many big mulie in this country as there are big whitetails. And, it is true that whitetail can be patterened easier, but mulie can be patterned!
Whitetail are now being managed in many parts of the country in a way that more mature bucks are now living than ever before. The same can't be said about mule deer. Most of us won't ever even get a chance to see a monster mulie, BUT many of us will at least see a large whitetail!!

I've never hunted mulies but I believe it's typically a spot and stalk type hunt. Longer shots, more open terrian and much more mileage on the legs. Hunting mulies isa loteasier with a rifle but still tough to take a big one....

No. They both posees challenges, different areas, differnt type of hunting. Its like compairing Baja off road trucks to Stock car racing. Same sport, different talents required.

As I said, a lot easier with a rifle and tough to take a big one, but not impossible!

RE: Mule deer vs. whitetail deer

I think it depends on where you live. I have a mule deer season on my land and have yet to shoot one.I have nothing that attracts them to my land. Where as I have lots of whitetail and tag out every year, and can be pickey about it. My buddy owns land about 10 miles down the road and he sees noting but Mullies. He cant get in range of a whitetail, but tags out on Mullies every year. So I think the answer to your question is relative to where you hunt.

RE: Mule deer vs. whitetail deer

I have spent many years hunting both types. Mainly the east and northeast for whitetail and Utah, Idaho, New Mexico, and AZ for mulies. Getting a big deer with a rifle has been easier hunting mulies. Getting "a deer" with a bow is easier hunting whitetail. In mulie country you rarely have the deer per square mile as you do with whitetail. Doesn't make whitetail hunting easier as I believe they know their area better then a mulie or at least use it better to their benefit.

The older deer in both species are always difficult to hunt. Getting one of these does take planning, scouting, and a lot of work. But every now and then there is that accident when a first time hunter on his first day hunting runs into a bruiser, fumbles with his gloves, gun, glasses, and finally gets the shot off and the big one drops.

I have been fooled by specific deer in both species many times after I thought I had them figured out. The really big ones are just tough to get without putting in a lot of work. Neither one is easier then the other when it comes to trophies.

The toughest deer of all in my opinion is the Coues.
