RE: Shot distances

MANY deer 20 to 25 yards average, one in PA was around 34 yards; one black bear in Ontario at 22 yards. I've not shot an elk yet but figure anything up to 30 yards my preference but in the right circumstances I may take a 40 yard shot.

My average shot is around 22 yards, but my longest was 43. I feel comfortable under most conditions shooting out to 30 yards, and under an ideal situation I will take a 40 yard shot, but that has not happend often.

Heck, how do I know? When you shoot 60 or 70 you can die before you get the average worked out. I've shot them from 7 feet to 40 yards. This year I've shot 5 at distances from 7 yards to 33 yards. I've shot twice at 40 and killed them both. Most fall somewhere between 20 and 30 it seems. Distance doesn't matter... it's shot placement.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

RE: Shot distances

Had two shots on bucks this year that I passed on that I'd have tried in years past. They were 28 and 30 yards, but walking. I could have drawn on them and tried to stop them by making a noise, but I just didn't like the distance. It seems the more I bowhunt the more I prefer my shots within 20 yards. The three shots I've made this year so far were 10-12 and 15 yards. All good hits, and thats what counts- knowing you made a good hit. A much more comfortable distance when dealing with wirey sting jumpy deer.

RE: Shot distances

Most of mine have been 15 yds or less, a couple at around 20yds. I don't think I've ever taken one further. I like to set up in thicker areas for bow, usually. Usually above 20 yds, I have few open shots, so I rely alot on the grunt - to bring them in, or back if they pass by.

I practice alot, and 30 is probably my max, and feel comfortable. I could see 40 on a feild, if I knew the distance within 3-5 yds.

I mostly hunt elk with a bow. My average distance runs 28yds. This year I blew right through my elk at 30yds, and it only ran 30yds. My longest kill has been 45 yds, and at that distance I had 14&quot; of arrow penetration.
