Shot distances

What is the average shooting distance with a bow, also what is the farthest shot any of you has ever made on a whitetail and been successful?

RE: Shot distances

my average with over 25 bucks has been under 20 yds. My longest shot was this year at 35 yds. I am willing to shoot to 40 yds if everything is perfect, but I shoot all year and have been practicing for that shot for many years. I still may pass on it if it ever materializes.

I've shot 2 deer with a bow and both was at about 12 yards. I like them close, makes it harder to miss!!

Well...I ain't never killed a deer with my bow yet. But all of my gun kills have been 30 yds or less with the exception of one. I figure my bow kills will be the same. I'm comfortable shooting out to about 35 yds, but I figure my first bowkill will be in the 10-20 range.

My limit with the perfect shot and conditions would be 40. I can shoot good out to 60, but would never take a shot that far on game. I just find practicing longer than I will shoot, tightens my groups at my effective range. My longest was 35 yards.

the 3 deer I've taken this year were at 10,12 and 15 yds. My average for all deer taken with a bow is 13 yds. The farthest was only 20 yds. I would shoot out to 25 if things were perfect.

I can be accurate to 30 yards. Got my first deer (button buck)with a bow last year at 20.

My longest was 36 yds I feel comfortable out to 40 but the most of the deer I have taken with a bow have been 20 and under.

MANY deer 20 to 25 yards average, one in PA was around 34 yards; one black bear in Ontario at 22 yards. I've not shot an elk yet but figure anything up to 30 yards my preference but in the right circumstances I may take a 40 yard shot.

My average shot is around 22 yards, but my longest was 43. I feel comfortable under most conditions shooting out to 30 yards, and under an ideal situation I will take a 40 yard shot, but that has not happend often.

Heck, how do I know? When you shoot 60 or 70 you can die before you get the average worked out. I've shot them from 7 feet to 40 yards. This year I've shot 5 at distances from 7 yards to 33 yards. I've shot twice at 40 and killed them both. Most fall somewhere between 20 and 30 it seems. Distance doesn't matter... it's shot placement.

Had two shots on bucks this year that I passed on that I'd have tried in years past. They were 28 and 30 yards, but walking. I could have drawn on them and tried to stop them by making a noise, but I just didn't like the distance. It seems the more I bowhunt the more I prefer my shots within 20 yards. The three shots I've made this year so far were 10-12 and 15 yards. All good hits, and thats what counts- knowing you made a good hit. A much more comfortable distance when dealing with wirey sting jumpy deer.

RE: Shot distances

Most of mine have been 15 yds or less, a couple at around 20yds. I don't think I've ever taken one further. I like to set up in thicker areas for bow, usually. Usually above 20 yds, I have few open shots, so I rely alot on the grunt - to bring them in, or back if they pass by.

I practice alot, and 30 is probably my max, and feel comfortable. I could see 40 on a feild, if I knew the distance within 3-5 yds.

RE: Shot distances

I mostly hunt elk with a bow. My average distance runs 28yds. This year I blew right through my elk at 30yds, and it only ran 30yds. My longest kill has been 45 yds, and at that distance I had 14" of arrow penetration.

I would say between 15 and 20 yards.

3 bow kills. 1-turkey~20 yards, 1 4pt~25yards, 1 doe~10yards,....I like to hunt in or close to thick stuff, so that really doesn't allow me to get shots more than 30 yards.(This also kinda takes away the temptation of taking a longer and riskier shot)

RE: Shot distances

My longest was 36 yards at a whitetail. But I won't do it again. My limit is 30 yards. On average, I would say 20 yards. This year, I took two so far both were 27 yard shots quartering away. Both went about 20-30 yards before going down.

My longest is 30yds and my average is 18 yds. I dont like shooting much farther than 25 yds. I practice up to 40 yds but dont like shooting a past 25yds.

Well lets see my longest is 0 yards and my average is 0 yards, of course I have not taken one with a bow yet! I am comfortable out to 25 if every thing is perfect, maybe after I get the monkey off my back and get my first one I would consider a 30 yard shot, but once again it would have to be a deer, broadside and head down.

My farthest shot was 32 yards, but I try to keep them at 25 yards or less. The two I've killed so far this year were at 18 and 16 yards.

Longest shot was just under 25 yards and it only happened once. Average is 5-15 yards. Closeset shot - I could have tackled her.

I've never hunted outside of the New Jersey woods and always hunt from the ground.

RE: Shot distances

Average I'd say just under 20 - say 17 or so.

Longest - 4 days ago I took a Y buck at 43 yards. Shot a perfect X through both lungs AND the heart - that heart shot was the FIRST in 5 years of bowhunting so my 'longest' was also my 'best'.

I shoot 2 inch groups at 40 yards and this shot was a clear passthru - I was quiet happy!

I got my buck at 4 yards a week ago, but I personally wouldn't shoot a deer over 20 yards. I practice at 20 yards max.

RE: Shot distances

I would say that the average range has been between 14 to 17 yards and I have killed a few out to 30 yards. I could honestly say that I'd pass on a deer at 40 yards. Too many bad things can happen at that range.

Ive got my first deer this year at 15 but willing to shoot at 30 yds. I think that a 30 to a 5 is pretty good, if you feel it then take the shot cuz the strongest is usually your instinct. Go get em at 20 yds.

My three deer this year have been (roughly) 15, 25 and 30+. I practiced religiously this spring and summer and feel very confident in taking a shot out to 35 yards with clear lanes and broadside shot.

I prefer 15-20...but who doesn't....
