RE: Roger Raglin Question

IMO, Roger Raglin is an animal killer, not a hunter. I heard him speak at a seminar a few years back and he must have said "I felt like lettin' the air out of somethin, ya know what I mean?" at LEAST a half dozen times. I cannot speak to his videos because I refuse to watch them......

RE: Roger Raglin Question

Years ago when I first saw a video of his I thought he was alright. The more I saw of him the less I liked him. He is pretty weird and that jimminy christmas gets pld. Then I started hearing the stories about his hunts. I never knew if they were true or not so I didn't really beleive them without proof. A few years ago my cousin became good friends with a guy in the hunting industry ( I won't say names or what company he owns because I don't want to hurt his business)but he told me cousin alot of stuff about some of the hunting celebs and the truth behind their kills and there are alot of them that I really have no use for. He said that R.R. is really a super nice guy and a great human being, but truthfully a very poor hunter. He said put it this way, if he actually had to hunt totally in the wild and hunt real free range animals, his famous trophy wall would be about 1/16th of the size it is now. I was bummed out at the stuff he knew about someof these guys because I really thought alot of some of them. But on the other hand , some of them are all that they appear to be also. That is good.

RE: Roger Raglin Question

I think it's more an issue of style than ability. RR has a flamboyant (talkative) style and he's kind of goofy. He does a lot of editing and reinacting but most videos do, or did, (Realtree anyone?) Personally I like his videos because he tries to teach you actual techniques not just offer voyarism hunts. I haven't watched much of his recent stuff because he's gotten into exotic hunting and African hunts, which I mentioned in another thread, doesn't appeal to me much. But his early stuff is a mix. I know he has hunted some ranches and some of the exotics are in fenced large acre ranches (we've had that thread too). But a lot of his early kills are on friend's farms and national forest. His video Close Enough to Kiss does have him shooting from the ground a lot but there's a lot of guys on this forum that do so as well. One of the big boys this year was killed on the ground and close too if I remember the story right. In his video about the Grand Slam he takes one deer on National forest in VA and one in a suburban woods in his home state of OK. He mentions that he has friends call him and tell him they've seen a big buck in their fields and he comes and hunts it. Depends on how much a purest you are. Some people on this forum are very much so, but they don't have to put "8 exciting kills" on film either. :D

RE: Roger Raglin Question

i dont really like to watch R.R. but it does always suprise me the amount of people that think a hunting video is any more than a video. Its a t.v. show, nothing more. A half hour of film may take an entire week to film and the kill may have happened in the first half hour. Its not that any show is done different its just that some are done better.Say the difference between Seinfeld and Just Shoot me.Its all a buisness, and mostly the reason for poor hunters, and no they are all not poor hunters, is the fact that it is entertainment. If you are part of the outdoor industry you are not going to hire a good hunter over a good accountant to keep your books. Same goes in front of the camera. your going to get the personality first and then products and lastly the hunt. So while R.R. film editors may be worse than the next, its doubtful that hes doing anything your favorites arent. The people that think their favorite video is exactly what it seems and wont watch someone elses because it seemed staged probaly wouldnt watch any video if they were there through the recording process.
