I agree with Snoogsdad. The Penn's Wood's is a great camera, although the price is pretty steep. I like the idea you can take the camera out of the unit and use it for other things (This keeps the wife happy;))

I've been using the trailghost P41LE. This is the camera most of the guys that I hunt with use. www.trailghost.comIt's a nice unit for the money.

I don't know how accurate this is, but I was told that some digital camera's take some kind of special battery like a Litium, or some kind of Nickel Cadium or something.

Personally - I have a Digital Stealth Cam that I have LONG AGO given up on because the batteries wouldn't last more than 2 days. BIG TIME HUGE MAD AT STEALTH!!! My buddy told me to buy some special battery to put in it, and it might fix my problem.

Problem with that....fancy kinds of batteries are usually pretty danged expensive!! Resolution: I told my buddy to loan me the money to get them. That way - when his trick didn't work, I could keep his money for setting me up. Better than chasin him around the woods to whoop his arse!

Anyway...I'm too scared to spend the extra money to find out. Anyone out there guinnea pigged this thought in the past?

My cameras are all digital. There are two batteries used, one for the control board and the other for the camera. The camera uses two AA batteries that I usually change when I check the camera. Battery life will vary, but you should get two or three hundred on a fresh set. I use rechargeables and change them every month or so.

The board battery is a 9 volt, and lasts 6 to 9 months, usually the entire season. This is for the P41LE from www.trailghost.comMy Penn's woods is the same camera and the board takes 4 c batteries that last the hunting season.

Buck Magnet--it's usually goodto do a reset function on your Cuddeback every now and then. I've been using mine now for a while and everything seems to be going OK. I've also used a Trail monitor put together by Circuitronique:- http://www.vigil.qc.ca/this camera has beenworking now for the last three years. I just swap memory sticks, change batteries and leave her alone.I'm also now using a Moultrie GameSpy 200, out of about 150 pictures I'll get about 10-12 bad ones--snowed out or cut in half, some even purplish/black--but I do get quite a few good ones.
The Leaf River DC-2BU also works well for me. I've just ordered a Penn's Woods 2.0 MP fitted with a Minolta (removable camera)--they're now on sale for $299--down from $610. Penn's Woods will also be coming out with a New 6.0 MP in another two months, but, but--you're looking at about $629--quite a bit to leave sitting in the woods unprotected.

ampahunter, where did you hear about the Penns Woods. Do you know what camera they are using? I hope it's not the Sony S600, I think it's too noisy and very slow.

Cybersniper, I was speaking to the co-owner, Greg Neumann seems like a good guy. [email protected]
The retired 4.0 MP has a Sony DS-041R removable camera and the 2.0 MP has a Minolta X-20.
The Sony he's using has a 2-second trigger time and that's good enough for me.
Hisunits have built in night sensitiviy adjustment. This means that the unit will not trigger if the animal is further than 25 feet. This eliminates photos of deer and just seeing eyes.

RE: May give up on Digital Game Cameras

The last camera I bought to test was the Moultrie 200 and it is really frustrating me. I've had it out four weeks and have not yet had it take 10 pictures.

When I put it out it takes pictures of me and when I've picked it up two weeks later there has only been a couple more pictures.

When I tested it for power-up time I really had to coax it to take my picture. Maybe the deer aren't working as hard at it as I was. I know they are there, the other cameras are getting them.

I can' t get it to take enough pictures to do a write up on the picture quality.

Also, I've purchased the 12 volt rechargeable battery for the Stealth Cam and so far I get about 5 days out of it.

Similar to what others have said above, digital scouting cameras with real digital cameras in them do great with 9 volt and rechargeable AA batteries. These cameras just keep chugging along.

Actually the units they sell now use a Sony DSC-P41. The I agree with you 2 sec is fine for me also. You said there was a 6.0 megapixel and that was the one I was inquiring about. The Sony S600 is a good 3 to 4 seconds minimum at night with a noisy lens motor. I had hoped they found a better camera. If not the current DSC-P41 is about the best one.

Check out this link for the curent camera info. http://www.pennswoods.com/DS-04.htmlIf you know about the 6.0 please share.

That's the camera in the Infrared, the other with the flash is with the camera I'd mentioned.
As far as knowing about the 6.0 MP--they'll be out in about two months--After learning about the price--camera with flash will run anywhere from $599 - $629 and the one with the IR will be about $699--I never really asked about which camera he was using as I'm not confortable leaving a unit with that value in the woods I hunt in--too many thieves are lurking in there and I would hate to drop a $600 trail camera to another thief. But I can find this out on Monday and update you on what the camera will be.

RE: May give up on Digital Game Cameras

If you check the Penn's Woods site @ www.pennswoods.com it lists the models. The Infrared is the http://www.pennswoods.com/DS-04IR.htmlthe DS-04IR. I am very familiar with the company and know Bill Powers, the guy who invented the board used in the camera. Trust me on this one, or look at their site, they use the Sony DSC-P41 4.1 megalpixel camera in the DS-04 model.

I agree with you that's a lot of monet to put out in the woods. At one point I owned six of them, but now only have two. As I posted earier, I switched to the Trail Ghost P41LE, which is the same camera the Penn's Woods uses. The Penn's Woods is still available if you search it at Cabelas http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?cmView=full&type=pod&id=0026548

I sent Penn's Woods an email requesting the info on the 6.0. You may want to look at the Trail Ghost cameras, for less than $100.00 you move from a 2.0 to the 4.1 model. www.trailghost.com
Good Luck!
