What is your max distance?
What is the max distance you will shoot at? For me it is 35 yards. I shoot my compound instinctively and shot my buck this year at 32 yards. I practice out to about 55 yards but I would never shoot at that distance.

RE: What is your max distance?
25 yds, although 20 is the farthest I've actually taken a shot.
|
RE: What is your max distance?
At a deer - 25 yards. I have shot deer up to 35 yards but will NOT do it again. Even the best shot can turn into a gut shot if the deer takes one step. That is what happened to me. And I was shooting 300 fps. By the way, I got the deer the next morning.

RE: What is your max distance?
My max is 30 and I've only taken one at that range. All others have been at 18 or less.
You will get a few talking 40+ but I feel it is an unethical shot because they are not caring if they miss or are just a little off because of the animals movement, wind, or obstructions. Nobody will convince me that a shot outside 35 yards has a high percentage of a clean, quick kill. I know I'll get a post or two of these guys pulling off the shot but they'll never tell you of the many they missed or didn't recover. Lefty Llewellyn |
RE: What is your max distance?
30 yards.

RE: What is your max distance?
I have 3 pins: 20, 25, 30 yards
On flat terrain, I can shoot 30 yards max. But I will always try to get 20 yards or closer. I only use the other two pins if the animal sees me, there is no chance of me getting any closer, or if the animal if running away and has stopped. I have only used my 3rd pin twice. I racall using my second pin once and made a terrible shot. Hit the animal, a goat, it the back of the jaw luckily cutting the throat. I had to finish him off. But most of my shots are not on flat ground and because i'm not very good at shooting on angles, I don't shoot unless I can use my first pin. Most shots are taken from 8 to 15 yards. Took about 60 animals now. Mostly goats. A few pigs. Nic |
RE: What is your max distance?
I feel confident to 30-35 yards but I have never had to take a shot past 20.....kind of a nice "cushion" though....

RE: What is your max distance?
About 35 yards.

RE: What is your max distance?
I will never shoot past 25yds.I hunt strickly in the woods and I believe an arrow can do alot of things the further it travels toward its target,as can the target. If you hunt field set-ups you may get a 30 or 35yd.shot,but it still means there's more room for error.IMO.

RE: What is your max distance?
I practice out to 50 yards just to perfect my form , but I never take a shot of over 35 yards at a deer .

RE: What is your max distance?
I respect people who say a 40 yard shot on an animal is too long. I have a personal range of 35 yards on a deer but have decided I will take a 40 yard shot on an elk because of the 14 inch vital area. It will pretty much come down to whether or not I feel comfortable with the shot. I may not feel comfortable with a 15 yard shot because of conditions. On the other hand I might have a bull standing at 42 yards broadside with no wind and no obstructions. It all depends on the situation for me but I try to stick to 35 on deer and 40 on elk.
|
RE: What is your max distance?
I practice diligently out to 90 meters, but my shots on game are considerably less. How far depends on the circumstances of weather, how confident I feel in the shot, whether or not the animal is relaxed and whether or not the animal is already wounded. I simply won't put a solid, arbitrary number on my maximum distance, but will say I try to get within spittin' distance every time.

RE: What is your max distance?
I practice out to 40 yards but will not take a shot at a whitetail over 30. Although all my deer have been taken at 25 yards or less. It's a real confidence builder practicing 10 yards further out of your comfort range and knowing you can hit your spot.

RE: What is your max distance?
Longest was 62 yards, which was from sheer unbridled youth and of course a bet that I couldn't make the shot. Great lesson for me because my shot was less than perfect and I unnecessarily but an animal through suffering, took about an half hour to track and dispatch the deer. Now I pride myself on how close I can get.

RE: What is your max distance?
30 yards is my max. I also practice farther for form and to show those wheelie folks even stick bow shooters can keep 95% of there arras in the center bail at 50 yards (about a 18" circle with 5 of these circles making up the bail and the ends of them facing the shooter)
Most of the time however I try to get as close as I can and usually end up screwing up when I should have and could have made a perfect shot at 20-25 yards, just something bout shooting one at 5 steps 2 years ago....someday I will better that ! |
RE: What is your max distance?
I have 4 pins on my bow sight they are 15 25 35 45 yards and they are not there just to look at either. I am confident at all ranges or it wouldn't be there. My first buck this year was shot at 35 yards and was a double lunger.

RE: What is your max distance?
I like to practice at 40 but would not shoot over 30 to many trees and such up here in MN.
|
RE: What is your max distance?
I realy like to keep things under 30, but I will shoot out to 35 yards under the right conditions.

RE: What is your max distance?
Depends a lot on the critter I'm about to kill and how I feel about the shot. I usually try and stay within 20 paces but have been known to shoot out to 30 on big game and 40 on squirrels and stumps.

RE: What is your max distance?
I just killed my first deer this year with my bow at 40 yards.
|
RE: What is your max distance?
My max is about 40 yards.
|
RE: What is your max distance?
My max is 30 yds. but do practice out to 40 yds.
Have never shot anything over 22 yds. though. (even when I use to hunt with a gun(have not used in 15 yrs.), I never shot anything that was over 60 yds.) |
RE: What is your max distance?
About the same as everybody else but the only diffenece would be before I go elk hunting I practice a lot out to 60 yards and would take a 50 yard shot on an elk If I know his exact yardage and he had no Idea I was there. A friend of mine who has the good fortune of spending a good amount of his life hunting just about everything with a bow says that on certain animals like elk he would feel better about taking a 40-50 yard shot on a calm animal than taking the chance of getting another 10 or 20 yards closer and trying to get a shot on a nervous animal. I mostly deer hunt and for me especailly in the woods with a treestand I wouldn't take anything over 30 and have been lucky enough that most was under 20 Just my own opinion and I think it depends on how much you practice and all the conditions.

RE: What is your max distance?

RE: What is your max distance?
I practice out to 60, but when conditions are right the longest shot at a deer would be around 40.

RE: What is your max distance?
30 yards for me. I would rather watch them than taking a shot that I would be uncomfortable with. I shot my first one this year at 20 yards.

RE: What is your max distance?
30 yards.

RE: What is your max distance?
The most I would ever shoot is 30yds. Although I have practiced up to 50yds. I don't feel confident in making a kill shot from that far.

RE: What is your max distance?
I shoot with a Keller pendulum sight from a treestand, so my maximum distance for any shot is determined by my bow and the sight. My old bow was accurate to 22 yds. I have bought a new bow that is much faster and should theoretically shoot further . All that being said, I still limit my shots at deer to less than 20 yds. I remember reading the results of a study several years ago that said, the average deer, given any sort of warning, can outjump an arrow at about 19 yds. I don't think wounding the deer is worth my shot. You must know your own capabilities and those of your equipment. Good luck.

RE: What is your max distance?
Well not to say I would ever do this again.... I shot my first deer with a bow this past Sunday... I only had 4 days left in season so I took this shot so I would not get skunked my first year bowhunting. I was 25 feet in my stand and the doe was I thought at 40 yards. I am pretty sure at 40 yards and found a lane she was heading toward. I took the shot when she stopped in the lane and heard the thud. She took off and I saw her fall not even 40 yards from the shot. When I stepped off the shot it was 51 yards or large steps (I am six foot tall so they are very close to a yard or longer steps). In all honesty I would say that the shot was between 40 and 50 yards seeing how the measurement was by steps. I use gold tip 5575 with 4" feathers and spitfire 100 grain heads. The shot was almost a pass through (hitting the lower ventricles), the arrow fletchings were the only thing still in her when I found her. But in retrospect I would never take a desperation shot like this if I was not 75% sure it would be a kill shot. I practice at all range's from 10 to 40yards.

RE: What is your max distance?
My buddy, who is a top notch shooter, had an elk duck his arrow at 25 yards this last season. The elk wasn't looking at him when he shot. He's lucky he didn't wound the animal.
Keep in mind, no matter how good you can shoot, you can never predict what the animal will do. Longer shots always increase the possibility of a poor hit. I know some people don't care if they hit an animal poorly, just give them a chance to get it, and they'll take that chance. Others, like myself, want to be sure that 99% of the time a killing shot will be made. In other words, some people have a higher tolerance for a poor hit, regardless of how talented they are in their shooting abilities. I can easily keep my arrows in a 4" group at 30 yards, but would never take a shot of that distance at an animal. My longest to date has been about 22 yards and I can't imagine that I'll ever take one longer. By the way, I'm 18 out 20 on big game. The two misses never hit the deer. Both times I hit a twig when hunting with a recurve as a teenager. Both of those shots were under 15 yards. I didn't realize what a little twig could do to an arrow. That was the last time I shot when a twig could possibly divert the shot. |
RE: What is your max distance?
I've taken a couple deer at 40 yards, but earlier in my bowhunting career. I haven't taken a 40 yard shot in probably 10 years. I've let more than one buck get away waiting for a better shot. The best example was a 12 pointer with some extra kickers, that would have made anyones book, standing broadside at 30 feeding on acorns. The way he was moving he was suppose to be in my lap in a couple minutes. A doe came running by and it all went bad real fast. Inside 25 I take the first good shot that presents itself unless I know without doubt I'll get a slam dunk.(Like the 12 pointer) At 35 I'll shoot but usually wait to see what's going to happen. At 30, a good shot with little promise of something better I'll take. A lot depends on the deers state of tension, daylight, weather(raining or not), etc. Every deer is different. Sometimes I guess right.... sometimes I don't. That's all part of the game.
