RE: Michigan Thinkin bout goin to only 1 buck a season!?!
Its just to bad that the DNR is all about money, and nothing else.Just look at what they have done with doe permits. Now that they have descimated the herd and are no longer giving out as many permits,or in the case of Wexford county here,no permits. They jack up the cost of the permit just to keep the revenue up.There are size limits on fish, why not bucks? I can't understand how some people I know will shoot a spike or a forkie every year and then complain that they never see any large bucks. What is the thrill in that? It can't be just for the meat because many of these bucks are smaller then a nice doe they could have taken.I think it goes back to the mentality that I get a buck every year so that makes me a bad assed deer hunter...BULL....A good deer hunter is someone that can take a deer that has a few seasons behind him...even if it means that hegoes without venison from time to time.Thats the hunter that has my respect!! One thing the one buck per year rule might do is to force people into taking more does (assuming you have doe permits available). This would balance the buck / doe ratio which should improve the quality of the herd.

The funny thing is that lower michigan was saying that there is to many deer down in the lower. But now there trying to stop the two buck tag. I like tobe able to shoot two bucks. Because I like to have one for bow and gun and plus the second tag the deer has to have a least 4 points on one side. Not that people even see any thing that size. I have been sent a survey for three years now and ido fill it out.

To me it does not matter if there is a two buck tag ora one buck tag. As I said earlier it is really up to us to do the management. If you want bigger bucks, don't shoot the little ones, if you want meat, shoot does or wait for the big guy and get the meat and the mount. If they leave it to two buck tags the first should be 3 or more on one side, the entire state should be DMU/QDM. And for one buck tag, I would do the same. Again limiting the number of doe tags in regions that have a low population would be a must and giving out the right amount in the highly populated areas is a must also.
Again, inevitably it is us who have to do the management. The DNR can sell all the tags they want but we are the ones who take the deer. Do it in the correct manner and the herd could be balanced and healthy, take too many in one area versus another and it could mean disaster as far as numbers go. Try for a few years to get people to shoot only better class bucks and to limit the does taken in a particular area to an amount that would help the herd instead of decimate its numbers. You will see a difference. We have a high doe to buck ratio in our area in a usual year so taking a doe or two out doesn't hurt and letting that fork or small six go doesn't hurt either, he is going to get bigger, I promise!!!! |

We are the management. Correct!

I have hunted through the only one deer per year-bucks only times and saw many a vehicle with a spike loaded on it. Maybe that wouldn't be the case today with people more aware of management practices. We have 700,000 firearm huntersand a great percentage of those people only hunt for 3 days or so, this scenario promotes the if it's got bone it's goin home.(very similar to if it' brown it's down). A point limit of 3 to a side might work much better (current 4 pt per side 2nd lic. is silly) along with an active registration program. I always stop at the deer check stations but have never been sent any questionnaire.
