Way to go Jolly!!!!! At the time you thought that the deer was wounded and you did everything you could to put the deer down. You made one heck of a shoot, and it put the deer down quickly. Now, get back out there and shoot a buck!

You and your buddy were successful stalking this deer the first time, you , maybe should have tried again before taking another shot.No doubt you feel bad, but don't hang your bow up for good. Live and learn. 110 paces is pretty far, unless your 3'6". Good luck the rest of the season Jolly.

Jolly, you did the right thing and made a heck of a shot to boot. Now go get the next one, and do the same thing if you find yourself in the situation you thought you were in. [img]http://gra.midco.net/gingerichs/moose.gif" > Edited by - Dacotah on 10/21/2002 20:55:29 |

RE: STUPIDEST THING EVER! Please read!
Riiiight! And I have several bridges for sale
You said <BLOCKQUOTE id=quote<font size=1 face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>"The shot was low and looked to miss the vitals." <hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' size=2 id=quote> Your friend said <BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>"Damn it, I don't think we're going to find that one."<hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' size=2 id=quote> How was that determined so quickly? Also, you did not see any outward physical signs that indicated the deer had been hit hard. Yet you took the shot. If you thought the shot missed the vitals why did you shoot, and from such an incredible distance? What was the distance? 110 paces (yards)? Plus, the deer was partly in brush. How much arrow penetration did you think could occur, and at what angle of entry? You going to tell us that you knew you could hit the kill-zone at that distance? What did you sight on, a tree top? You declare to be guilt ridden and are going to hang your bow up. You used all the self-punishing terms e.g., painfully clear, not enjoyable, I feel so sorry, I'm quite shaken, etc. Get real! You knowingly and intentionally took a "Hail Mary" (clout) shot, and by fluke and fluke only, the arrow hit the deer in the head. You wanted to brag about the shot and make it appear that you, or anyone, can make an accurate and killing shot at that distance. However, you knew that people would be on your case like stink on you know what. So you used a cover scent to get brag-shot told. These statements are your real story: <BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>"At the release I knew it was going to be damn close."<hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' size=2 id=quote> <BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>"When we walked off the yardage it was 110 plus paces."<hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' size=2 id=quote> <BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>"I will say to those of you who say it was an impossible shot and that people who claim to shoot animals at extraordinary distances are full of it. They are not, and it is unfortunately a makeable shot as I proved to myself."<hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' size=2 id=quote> Auto pilot is not turned on automatically, someone has to first throw the switch. You do not have to hang your bow up -which you were not going to do anyway. Just realize your shot was 100% pure luck and do not promote such shots as being "makeable," as to be able to kill a deer at such a distance and with skill. Edited by - c903 on 10/22/2002 08:36:18 |

Shaken Rogers,
Death is not pretty. I think your trauma is because you had to witness this one close up. Its a hard thing. If it stops you I understand. Ever see an animal die from liver flukes. That's what they would do if we didnt harvest the population regularly. Its very ugly. Good luck. P.S. Considering some of the posts where people brag about 60 yard shots your attitude is commendable. "Size isn't important, but it HELPS!!!" |
RE: STUPIDEST THING EVER! Please read!
Aaron,
I haven't read this whole thread...but stop being hard on yourself. You thought the deer was wounded and wouldn't be recovered. You made a split-second decision to try to put it down. Honestly, my congrats on having the instinct to do that. Yes, putting down an animal with a wound like that is tough. I spined a deer a few weeks ago that gave me a real bad time. I got pretty close, and she turned and started kicking. I backed up a few yards, and instead of trying to get away, she curled up, looked right at me with those big brown eyes, and then her whole face started quivering. It really ate me up inside, but I put her down...like I had to. In my opinion, when you're dealing with a wounded animal that's hit bad...get another shot in the air. Your intentions were honorable, and in the best interests of the animal and it's recovery. Be proud of yourself. JRW |

Jolly,
Please do not hang up on hunting. Everyone who has been in the woods for any amount of time has done something we later feel bad about. Hindsight is of course 20-20. The results are that we learn from everything we do, POSITIVE or NEGATIVE. GForce Shoot often - Hunt always |

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote<font size=1 face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>”You could just see her inside the woods<hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' size=2 id=quote> ........at how many yards?????
I cannot find where “Jolly Rogers” states that his point of aim was the head of the deer. If the deer was standing inside the boonies, looking at the two hunters, what honorable and ethical actions were taken by “Jolly?” The shot was nothing more than a “Hail Mary” that was guided only by incredible odds and pure luck. They should have backed off and waited, then initiated the tracking process to determine whether or not the deer was hit hard. “Jolly” said: <BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>It turns out that my buddy had missed almost completely and had just taken a bit of hair off the belly.<hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' size=2 id=quote> Anyone that knows how to read a post-shot arrow would known that examining the arrow would have indicated that no major entrance into the deer’s body had occurred. Coupled with the apparent not-injured actions of the deer, “Jolly” and his friend, if skilled, or if they cared, should have been able to determine that the deer was not severely wounded and would live. If the arrow revealed a severe wounding hit, then wait and track the deer. Instead, they totally ignored the proper thing to do, and “Jolly” took a shot, that all the odds for a killing hit were against “Jolly,” that could have NOW wounded the deer that probably would not have been recovered. If “Jolly” cannot control his emotions and his behavior while armed with any weapon, and loses his composure and simply goes into “auto pilot,” he has no business in the field. Would he go into auto pilot if he sees a rustle in the brush or a moving figure in low light, but cannot discern the target? I don’t buy any of his story beyond his incredibly lucky shot. He got excited and shot an arrow into the air, where it landed he did not care. As for those who are commending him and believe the shot was justified and honorable, and the end result was due to “Jolly’s” prowess with a bow, bring a very large truck to haul your bridge away.
