RE: What triggers the rut?
tr - thats some very informative info - thanks. One question though (maybe I'm a little stupid) ---
<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote<font size=1 face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote> The MN studies show that it is mostly fawns that breed in December (most of us MN hunters thought it was yearlings). <hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' size=2 id=quote> What is the difference between a fawn and a yearling? |
RE: What triggers the rut?
T.R. You are the MAN! Wanna be my new best friend? Thanks for all the info, Man it sounds like you've done your homework. So in laymens terms I should go get in my stand and not come down till I fill my tags or mid-November!
Seriously though, are you a hunter or just a scientist? Do you ever get time to bow hunt? Seems like you've got the "Santa on Christmas" syndrome, everyone else has fun and it's your busiest time. Thanks again... |

RE: What triggers the rut?
A fawn is 6 mos old, a yearling is 18 mos old.
Thanks guys, I do work at it. This year, like the last 10, I get very little time to hunt, I'm doing elk research for my second year. Yes, I do get some time. But, I have to be with the elk every day in order for the study to be valid. I pass up more 140-200 class bucks at 10-15 yards than anyone I know, because if I kill the bucks I don't learn anything more about them that year. I'd love to be best friends with all of you, that's what Christianity and hunting are all about, lots of good friends. I'm going to stick my neck out here, I don't know if this is proper, and I ask the webmster to delete what is improper. If any of you guys want a free catalog of my books, e-mail me direct with your mailing address. I guarantee you'll learn something from the books, and if you take a few suggestions, you'll become better hunters. Commit a ranodm act of kindness, and blame it on God. T.R. RE: What triggers the rut?
According to the researchers; photoperiod (number of hours of SUN light during the day). But, the deer in different areas are conditioned (through several generations and survival of the fittest [fawns that were born at the right time survive to pass on the genetics]) to breed at the appropriate time when they are ready to breed. The appropriate photoperiod in each area occurs at the same time in that area every year. The full moon dates vary year to year, the rut doesn't (not by more than a week or so, remember poor forage, poor health can cause a late rut). The 2nd full moon can occur from Oct. 21 to Nov. 28. Don't tell me peak breedng changes from the last week of Oct. to the last week of Nov. in the northern states. Call your local deer biologist and ask their opinion.
