I killed my first one, a doe, my first bow season. I think there are varying factors to how long it will take once you start bowhunting - how much you practice, how much time you spend in the field, how much you try to learn about bowhunting including low/high percentage shots and what to do after the shot, deer population of areas you hunt to name a few, and of course luck doesn't hurt.

First Bow season right before the start of the second firearm season here in Illinois,, missed at three big doe thoughout the season and had a string loop come untied while drawing on a doe, then i turn around and shot a button buck at 10yrds, so all in all my bad season turned out to be a good one.

1st season about the middle of November during a steady rain. It was a young button that I mistook for a doe.

I got lucky and had a 4-point and two does come into range the afternoon of opening day bow this past season (which was my first). The 4 gave me such a perfect shot that I couldn't resist and took it with a lung/liver pass through at about 20 yards. I was feeling good until I missed a doe 3 times in a row about 2 weeks after that.

It took me the second week of my second season. My first season I passed up multiple doe wanting a buck. Then my father-in-law talked me into shooting a doe because 'it will be the best practice you can get for when a nice buck does come along', so I did and she only went about 30 yards.

Sevenyears ago when I was twelve...it was my first season, second week into archery season and I hunted with my dad. It is a hunt that i will never forget. I shot a doe and tracked it for 70 yards. Good times

RE: How long

The evening of opening day during my third year of bowhunting is when I had my first oppertunity to harvest adoe, but I missed her at 20 yds. I didn't follow through and I shot right over her back. Since that day, my pre-shot motto includes the phrase, "Follow Through".

I passed on a small doe the next year, my only chance of the year, so I didn't get anything that year either.

Finally on the second day of my fifth year hunting, I got a solid oppertunity. Thethree point came up from a river bottom at 15 yds, and I plugged one through him. That was my first archery deer and first buck ever. Not a bad way to start off my archery hunting career.

2nd night of opening weekend in my 1st year. I started late and was 23 when I picked my 1st bow. Shot a doe from a groundblind, have been hooked ever since.

Yepper know the feeling, though I would rather be out for turkeys, can't wait till I can get one again. I think everyone has it figured climb a tree, shoot a deer and get down. Not that easy. Now if I could just get a buck to cooperate!
