Scored on a spike yesterday
After raining for a day and a half I was ready to get into a tree when I left the house there was a small mist still coming down and the wind was blowing pretty hard.
By the time I had driven to my parking site the mist had stopped but the wind was sure gusting up. Due to one thing or another it was 4:00 by the time I got into my stand as the wind kept gusting I began to feel that I didnt have much of a chance to see anything and then the mist came back I had been in the stand for about an hour when all of a sudden I saw movement about 40yds down from me in the small field I was watching. Sure enough it was a deer a small doe and then more movement 4 more appeared dont know where they came from when I saw them they were already about 20yds into the field.
They wasnt paying any attention to the wind just browsing along there was 2 spikes and 1 doe with a young one and another doe alone I picked out the largest spike and decided to take him if he came into range. As they browsed around I could have shot the small spike or the young doe several times as they both stopped broadside at 20yds several times.
Finally the larger of the spikes was about to feed into range when something spooked him and he ran to the other side of the large pine in front of me, he came to a stop at what I thought was about 28yds so I leaned out and aimed a little high and released I heard the distinct thump of the arrow hitting him and he bolted back down the hill as the others also left the scene. I watched him enter the woods about 50 yds below me.
For some reason I felt it was a bad shot and decided to climb down and try to find my arrow and see what kind of blood. Usually I wait at lest 30mins but the misty rain and already soaking wet ground would make it hard to track him and I wasnt making any noise with the wetness. I couldnt find any trace of the arrow nor any blood at all so I decided to go to the edge of the field where he went into the woods as I went along I kept looking for blood and couldnt find any at all. I wasnt 100% sure where he went into the woods and then seen where he had slid in the very wet field still no blood I looked several feet down and saw where he had slid again and found 1 small drop of blood I looked and looked and saw no more so I went about 15 feet on down toward a small creek and saw where he had crossed and found blood there in fact quite a bit with bubbles in it. a few feet further was a fence about 4 ft high and he had jumped it. There was blood everywhere on the ground and high on the brush I crossed the fence and it started up hill there was blood going around the hill no up so I thought I would go a little more and then If I didnt find a good trail I would wait until today and go back as I still it was a bad shot. As I looked out the hill I saw him piled up back down near the creek I knew he was dead by the way he was laying all in all he had ran about 100yds and was about 50 yards from my stand.
I field dressed him with my small pocketknife instead of climbong back into the tree to get the large knife. all in all from time of shot to recovery was 15 minutes and I had thought it was a bad shot. I had entered high about 2 inches above the lung on entry and went down and through the lung and out the front shoulder on the other side a near perfect shot really. I swear those 100gr shockwaves do a great job the only thing I couldnt find the arrow and I hate that as I had now taken a total of 4 deer with the same arrow, just changed the blades on broadhead. I know this is long but it goes to show dont give up even with no blood trail I am nearly blind it is very had to see expecally when its that wet but he was there and I knew it.
