But it was quite a few years ago--22 to be exact.
It was Dec. 24th and starting to get dark. I hadn't seen a deer all afternoon and some kids from the nearby neighborhood had been walking alond the edge of the woods and shooting their 22's at anything they felt like shooting.
A little after 5pm, a deer appeared coming down a trail next to me. It took so long that it was near the end of legal hours when it finally got to my location.
I was using a Cobra pendulum sight then -- the kind with the small, red bulb on the end that could be turned on in low light situations. Since I knew a shot was about to present itself, and it was nearly dark, I turned on the light and drew as the deer walked behind a large tree.
I waited for a long time on the deer to emerge. It had lowered it's head when it went behind the tree and was sniffing the ground as it moved forward. Then it lifted it's head -- and the lighted, red bulb was right on the end of the deer's nose! I quickly adjusted the sight to the correct location and released the string.
Rudolph died with-in 30 yards from a perfect heart shot. As I dragged the deer out, I could see area residents in their home with Christmas trees light up and decorations everywhere -- and I'm dragging out Rudolph.
It was heartwarming.
And true. This happened to me 22 years ago and was the 2nd deer I ever killed.

I killed Donner and Blitzen last year in the Northwest Territories, so the rest of Santa's reindeer must be working extra hard these days! (No wonder I've been getting a lump of coal in my stocking.)
