I would say bad shot placement as well. What type of broadheads are you using?

I thoughtIseen a couple deer the other night crossing the road with bandages on them.........lol kidding. sounds to me you hit a non vital area. I try to aim for the lungs every time because you usually watch em fall. dont give up and practice a lil more. it happens to the best of us...good luck
