Default pop quiz hot shot, what would you do??

so, I go out yesterday with my rifle to a overgrown stream bottom surrounded by mainly by open area. I see a doe almost immediately about 400 yds away. long story short, I stalk her and take and make my longest shot with a gun. about 200 yds. I am walking to get her and jump another deer that is limping badly. someone had taken a frontal shot at this deer and it's left front leg was barely hanging on. I take three shots at it running and kill it. sad too, because it was a nice button buck. I call the game warden (because where I am you only can kill one a day) and ask what to do. I was a bit iffy on this, because I know how they can be. I did get another tag 'free' of charge. he thought this little one was following the doe. what would you have done???

also, he said if we see a deer that is showing signs of cwd, don't shoot it, just note the location and phone a warden. he said there is no law, but that is what they are advising. I'd shoot it and let it lay, and let them come get it. You??

You know the CWD thing is the same here in oregon, They tell us the same thing??? I guess it might be because the test has to be done with in 12 hours to conferm it. Thats got to be it . they want to kill it so they can get a fresh sample. I guess Id let it walk and call fish and game. as far as the botton buck. Fish and game wouldn't let you tag that deer ???? confused as to why you were issued another tag???

dnr only allows you to tag one deer per day in the county where this deer was shot. I only had one more antlerless tag. Personally, I wouldn't have shot this guy unless he was hurt. I didn't want to use one of my tags on him anyway.

I just made a post about the same exact thing excpet I didnt shoot a doe first. If I thought the animal was going to die due to an injury then I would put it down also. I guess it would be a judgement call based on the animals condition, appearance etc ...

Tough call. I'd have to say that I could only answer that if the opportunity came about.

I wouldn't be on anyone's case for going either way with the decision.

I guess if I positively knew that the animal had CWD, I'd shoot it and let it lay. I also would tell DNR that the animal was down.

We don't have a "one per day" limit(What's the point of that anyway?) , so I would have shot both . In your situation with the OPD limit I still would have shot both and tagged both if it came to that .

My first year hunting I had a similiar situation. I heard a gunshot not far away and a doe came running right at my ground blind. The deer actually hit the blind I was in and flopped to the ground with her head up 2 yards away. The original shot had hit her guts and broken the back leg. I shot the doe and went to find the orginal hunter. I found him sprinting down the other side of the field with no hunter orange on. I did not have a doe permit at the time, so I called the DNR. The agent said it was technically illegal for me to shoot an animal I did not have a tag for wounded or not. However, he said I also did the ethical thing and put a mortally wounded deer down. He gave me a road kill permit so I could still keep the meat.
If I see a woundeddeer then I will always shoot it.

I can't say exactly what I would do.

On one hand I know that a lot of severely wounded deer survive for years and years (three legged deer, deer with completely busted limbs, huge wounds) as we often take them long after they have healed.

On the other hand there is obviously the question of what is humane? Letting something that will most likely die suffer just because I don't have another tag?

But on the third hand the coyotes and the ravens have to eat too. Thousands (maybe millions?) of deer die of "natural" causes every year. The only thing that makes this one special is that I was there to see it.

I'm leaning towards probably shooting the wounded deer (without a valid tag for it that is) assuming that I know it's an easy shot, it's a doe or a fawn and if I think I have a chance of making my case with any EPOs I might meet.
