Default BAITING????

Do you all bait where it is legal? Just wondering what you all thought about it. I'm 13 days into the season and haven't got a shot of yet.

Baiting is no substitute for intense scouting and knowledge of deer and deer behavior. Studies have been done that conclude that baiting may result in deer movement becoming more during nighttime hours. Baiting is legal in my state and I've experimented in years past with feeders but had no improved results. I know a guy who fills his feeders religiously and still has no luck. If there are deer in your area then they are there for a reason...that reason being that there is adequate food and cover. Establish where and what these are and hunt the transition area between them and be patient. In my area deer don't move much this time of year so I never expect a great deal of activity. Once the rut comes I see many more deer. Of course pay attention to scent control, movement, etc. Good luck.

In NJ, it is legal to hunt over food, salt, etc.. My buddy and I dump corn near our stands in an effort to persuade the existing deer population to pattern themselves near our stands. We have not found that it increases the # of deer that we see on the property & it only slightly increases the odds that they will come in for a close shot.

We bait here in Texas. Where I hunt we have oak trees on our property, and on the years that we have a good mast crop, the feeders are basically worthless. Feeders definitely don't guarantee you a kill. I will say that early season and late season it does help bring them in though.

I wait after, and before the season. In PA, it is illegal to hunt over bait. The best method is hunting between a feeding site and a bedding area, so you can catch the deer in the transition before nightfall.

Thanks Mike from Texas...But where were you when I was getting beat up on this thread a couple days ago...lol (baiting illegal in NY) Man I coulda used some help back there...

bad czech...
Like 2buck says, It can be usefull in positioning a deer for a shot but you still need to be set up around lot's of activity. It's by no means a surefire way to success...

Good Luck All....Fletch

Cloud 9, are you for banning mock scrapes, calls, rattling, decoys, Scent controlled garments, rangefinders, carbon arrows...the list goes on? Why does baiting always getting the ban it, non-ethical BS? I think by the response given, no one feels it is really an advantage over no bait, except maybe shot position. If you want to all go back to loin cloth and sticks well ok....i however don't think you feel other market products, tech, etc are to much advantage to todays hunter, do you?

As far as baiting, legal here. I don't have a problem with it. I don't bait personally. Why no advantages in my locations. I do however throw out some bales after seson in the hope of finding some sheds....oooooooo bad hunter!!!!!

to each his own! Please lay off the baiters, just b/c you can't, don't or whatever doesn't mean its wrong.
