RE: Anyone use the snort/wheeze?
I too use my mouth to mimic the call and have watched bucks react pretty darned strongly to it from about November 15th on...in my parts..... I use it when I get a "grunted in" or "rattled in buck"..hanging up. I have had bucks literally come flying in ready to fight. One buck a couple years ago after rattlinghung upon me at about 70 yards..I could see him down in the creek bottom in the brush..( i had my wifes father with me..first time whitetail hunter..) the buck was moving around scent checking....it was getting dark so I snort wheezed and the buck immediately pinned his ears back and came up out of the brushy creek bottomona direct stiff legged burred up neck ...walk... it was awesome. My father in law hammered him ( who I was sitting with) at 25 yards!
After the shot...he looked at me and said " what in the hell kinda call was that" I just laughed and said snort wheeze...He said geesh I thought you had lost it! lmao I laughed so hard... anyway.. he still tells his buddies that story.. |
RE: Anyone use the snort/wheeze?
I use it sparingly as I've noted that it has a tendancy to scare off the runts and does. Of course, the big boy is what we're after anyway. This is a call bucks use prior to fighting so the lesser deer tend to be afraid of a more dominant buck that may be using this call. I've also seen it be completely ineffective as well. Deer are funny that way. I had a beautiful 140 class 10pt. tending a doe a couple years ago in range, but in the tangles and blow down behind me (of course). As they wandered off I tried getting them to come my way blowing the grunt and the snort wheeze. He looked over, didn't spook but just ignored it. He probably figured he has his chic, no sense in running to a fight.

Exactly Bob, I think it works best when you havemature buck that is willing to put up a fight...and hasno does, looking for some action.. |

There is an example of the snortwheeze on my site if you want to hear it www.hunttones.com
This was created just using my mouth but it is pretty realistic to what I have heard in the woods. |

RE: Anyone use the snort/wheeze?
I had excellent results the very first time I tried this call. I heard a guy say on a hunting show that he never had negitive results with the snort wheeze. I was hunting in Pike Co. IL on Nov. 2nd. I had a spike horn come in with a big buck in tow. They split about 60 yards out and the spike came by at 20 yards. The big buck stayied out of bow range and headed off in a different direction. After several grunts and doe bleats with little reaction from the big boy, I said what the heck. I gave him my best snort wheeze I could imitate. He locked up, spun around and came marching right to me. At 30 he stopped broadside for a perfect shot, but my dang safety harness had me ina bind and couldn't draw my bow. Ilet him walk on past and finally got him stopped again at 40 yards. I missed the shot low, but had a great experience with the snort wheeze call. I assume the reason the call worked so well was because the spike horn was in the area when I made the call. The big buck thought the spike horn challenged him.
I did kill a nice 9 pointer the very next morning chasing a doe. He wasn't quite as big as the deer I missed, but my best bow kill to date. Wish I could post pics but my pic file is to big and I don't know how to change the size. |
