NY rut
#11
I hail from Delaware County, NY, and have hunted this area for over twelve years now with over 20 deer under my belt. I think everyone needs to remember that "the rut" varies according to area, especially in a state as large as New York. We have a wide variety of different geographies, and while the photoperiod of the sun is the primary factor in creating the rut, other factors such as environment, food supply, etc can affect the rut too. I just returned from a weekend trip to Petersburg, NY and the deer up there arent rutting that hard yet. Low and behold, as I was pulling into my driveway, a stiff-legged and thick-necked 8 pointer was making his way across the road, not really paying to much attention to me. I would say the rut is just beginning in WMU 4o and the surrounding region (the Catskills). That said, the weather this weekend really sucks, so maybe this will delay things long enough for the lead slingers to have the heart of the rut. Spring Valley Sportsman, a excellent archery shop/scent creator reported to me the other day that their does have not even gone into heat yet, hence they have not been able to get any esterous doe urine, which is a pretty good indication of what the local herd is like.
But...from my experience in this area, which is fairly extensive, I would say the rut will be going hard next week, with the large bucks going noctural and early morning in response to the HUGE hunting pressure created by a weekend opener, but this is all just my humble opinion
