URGENT PLEASE GIVE ME ADVICE I NEED TO KNOW TONIGHT!!!!

When hunting from a stand do you aim higher or lower? IM hunting from one for the first time tomorrow please let me know.

[&:]Man,,if your going to hunt from a tree stand,,YOU NEED TO PRACTICE FROM A TREE STAND...Not good, buddy, not good.
The only thing worse than being unsure about the stand location you picked is,,,BEING UNSURE OF HOW YOUR EQUIPMENT WILL PERFORM !!.
I have been there,,a long time ago.Since then I ALWAYS make sure my gear will get the job done :D

If you don't know this late in the game perhaps you should pass on the stand until you have the opportunity to practice from the elevation you will be hunting from. If you don't know with a reasonable certainty whereto aim, then you don't need to take the shot and risk wounding and not recovering any game animal. I know this isn't what you wanted to hear but it is the best advise I can offer you. I think what Droptines means is that you have no idea how your bow shoots from elevation. BTW the advise I offer is constructive criticism. If you take it as harassment it pretty much tells me your mind is made up and you're going to hunt from that stand whether you are ready to or not.

RE: URGENT PLEASE GIVE ME ADVICE I NEED TO KNOW TONIGHT!!!!

It depends on how high you will be hunting and how you have your bow sighted. Droptines was simply suggesting that you need to practice from the conditions under which you will be hunting, he wasn't harassing you, he was being honest. Typically, you aim at the lower 1/3rd when hunting from above, like 18+ feet. I suggest that you do not hunt from a stand if you havent practiced from one.

just remember the distance is the horizontal distance to the deer, the diagonal you're shooting on doesn't matter. so if the deer is at the same elevation as the base of the tree, and 20 yards from the tree, use your 20 pin. it doesn't matter that the deer may be 22 yards from you as your up in your stand. don't ask, its physics, and its real. and bend at your waist. don't drop your bow arm to aquire the target. draw and anchor like you always do and bend at your waist and you'll be fine. if you drop your bow arm you'll be changing a lot of things about your shot, and it will effect placement. if you bend at your waist, and know the horizontal distance to the deer, you'll be just fine. good luck.

Get up on your roof or a tall ladder and shoot a few arrows tonight. See where you are hitting.
Do this in full hunting gear, everything you will have on tomorrow.
As long as you have been practicing from the ground and are accurate you'll be fine after shooting a few arrows from above.

PS
Shoot your broadheads. The sharpen them up before tomorrow.

i agree with the others...you should really practice from one first...the difference between the ground and a treestand is like night and day....please wear a harness if you're huntin' from a stand...if you don't have one then please stay on the ground...we would hate to have to read your obituary.

Good point, I forgot to mention a saftey harness.

I READ THAT WHEN SHOOTING FROM A DOWNWARD ANGLE or AN UPWARD ANGLE THE FORCE GRAVITY HAS ON THE ARROW IS NOT AS SEVERE AS IF U WERE TO SHOOT LEVEL TO THE GROUND. PEOPLE (sorry) always try to compensate when shooting from an upward/downward angle...DON'T. aim right were u wan't to put the arrow and it will fly true. i don't know the physics on why an arrow drops the most when fired from a flat, level placement to the ground and not from an angle, say a shot from a tree or shooting up on asteep cliff/ravine, but it does.

Actually, gravity works the same at an angle or on a level; that's why you've got to know your "true" distance from the target, not your "line of sight" distance. There are physics majors on here who can come behind me to give you the formula, but you basically need to be concerned with the distance from the base of your tree to your target -- not the distance from where you are 15-20 foot high in the tree to the target. Another way to do this (if you're using a rangefinder) is to range a spot from your stand at the equivalent height that you want a reading; it accomplishes the same effect.

RE: URGENT PLEASE GIVE ME ADVICE I NEED TO KNOW TONIGHT!!!!

Shoot like you were standing on the ground. Just bend at the waist, don't drop your bow arm.

I also wondered about what height does to your arrow and I noticed with my range finder, that the base of a tree I was ranging was 20yds away. I then took a range from that same tree only this time I took it level with where I was standing (18ft up) it was 19yds this makes a 1yd difference....not much. I did the same thing at 40yds and the level range was 38yds.

So what I'm trying to say is if you know the distance you are shooting, shoot the same pin you would if you were on the ground and you will be within 2yds out to 40. Just remember to bend at the waist. people have a tendency to just lower their bow arm and that will move there peep alignment with the sight and thus move your point of impact.

Good Luck hunting.

Forget all that, just shoot, ask questions later...

Thats what everyone is trying to NOT MAKE YOU DO.

I read in bowhunter magazine that if you are around 20ft. up in a tree stand that your 20 yard pin will be accurate at 27 yards because of the force of gravity at that angle. Is this true?

I don't like to have to think too much when a deer steps into range,so I use a pendulum.
No guesing,,just aim and shoot.Perfect every time :D

seriously, i'd like to see the math on that one. you're going to get a downward acceleration of 9.8m/s2 due to gravity no matter what angle you shoot from. this is irregardless of your horizontal velocity, and will not effect it.

if you shoot a rifle perfectly horizontally on an open plane and drop a penny from the same height at the exact same time, they will both hit the ground at the same time.

Best advice I could give you. If you shoot like this the arrow will fly the same as on the ground. I have done this for 21 years now, but I would suggest to practice a first.

RE: URGENT PLEASE GIVE ME ADVICE I NEED TO KNOW TONIGHT!!!!

I asked this very question a while back and some of the guys posting now are probably the ones who answerd it.

It's not about how far the arrow has to travel to get to the target. It's about how far the target is away from the base of the tree. For example, the deer could be downhill and 30 actual yards of arrow flight away but you can't use your 30yard pin. Instead, do this: draw an imaginary horizontalline from the base of your tree perpendicular to the tree and outward towards and of course abovethe deer. Then draw an imaginary line from the deer straight up until it intersects the first imaginary line. This will indicate the yardage you have to aim for. The reason for this is gravity actually only has that many yards to act on your arrow.

If the deer is uphill just revert simply this formula.

If the deer is on level ground, just aim for the distance that the deer is away from the base of the tree.

Thanks for the advice. I didnt even see a deer so we didnt have to worry about lol but it was fun being up in the stand.
