Default A first for me bowhunting.

You ever see someone elses deer expire in front of you while you were hunting?

I was sitting in my stand this morning tucked back in a wide hedgerow overlooking a hay field. All of the sudden I see hear this crashing through the hedge about 60 yards to my right. Then I see a big fat doe bolting into the field. She slows down a bit and is now about 100 yards right out in front of me standing still. Then she plopped down in the field. I thought something must have got her spooked pretty bad, but why would she stop there instead of running for thicker cover if she was spooked. Then she gets up and takes about 3 steps and beds back down. She did this over and over again. I thought UT OH something aint right with this deer.

I got my binos out and looked her over and saw she'd been hit. She was laying there in the grass waving her tail and swinging her head back and forth. I watched this for about an hour. Sure enough I look to the edge of the cut cornfield behind me and see a guy in camo following a bloodtrail. He's approaching from my back right where the doe busted through the hedge. I tried everything to get his attention without spooking the deer, but he couldn't see me.

The doe was still out there bedded down and the guy was approaching dangerously close to jumping her. I had to get his attention pretty quick or the deer would be up and running again so I reached in my pack and grabbed my orange ribbon that I carry to mark bloodtrails and ripped off a string of it. Then I grabbed my grunt tube and grunted at him LOL[:-]. I got him to look over and started waving the orange ribbon. He looked at me in his binoculars and I motioned for him to slowly walk over to me.

He approached my stand and I was giving him singnals to go slow the whole time. I let him know the deer was bedded down and I was watching her 100 yards or so in front of me.I told him to juststay put and I'd keep watching her. He plopped on a rock and I watched for a little longer. I didnt' see movement for quite a while and it was evident that she expired.

I climbed down and we walked up to her and he recovered his harvest!! Pretty interesting ordeal. I helped him field dress her andhe was going to call a buddy of his to help him drag her out. I told him not to bother I'd drag with him back to his truck. We dragged her out and he gave me a ride back to my truck. He couldn't thank me enough for helping him out.He was unbelieveably appreciative. I don't know this guy from a bag of beans. It was nice to be able to help another hunter out. I honestly think if I didn't get his attention the doe would have bolted and maybe not be recovered. I gave HNI a good plug and hinted towards a different approach to recovery next time.

Anyway.... sorry the story was so long winded. In all my years bowhunting, that was the first time something like that has happened to me. All in all a pretty neat deal.

Nice NYBH, never had one expire in front of me but I was hunting so public ground earlier in the season and I heard a deer get smoked with an arrow from about 100 yds away in my treestand. The guy shot it out of his ground blind and but it ran the opposire my of my stand location.

Happened to me on Opening Day two years ago. I watched a small 6 point walk over to where I'd seen an empty ladder stand on my way in. I didn't know that someone had entered it after I passed it and I heard a deer coming busting back through the brush right at my stand.

I KNEW what had to have happened.

The buck fell right under my treestand! [:@] I waited until I saw the guy trailing it and called him over to show him where it was. He was greatful and I also plugged HNI. He was on my friend's land and I have exclusive permission there. I told him politely about it, helped him with his deer and never saw him again.

That is the story of a true sportsman. I wish more people would do the same in that situation.

I often wondered about that happening to me but it never has. Nice job on looking out for him. You may get the favor returned some day.
