I think many people confuse a shoulder blade hit with a "shoulder" hit...........when someone says "I blasted right through the shoulder and got a pass through I immediately assume they are talking shoulder blade. Many broadheads will pop through a shoulder blade........but to destroy a 4" solid round bone and keep pushing hard enough to get through the deer is an entirely different story.

Neither shot is a good one..........like BGFischer said.........you have plenty of room for error behind the shoulder......a good 4-6" will still keep you in the lungs...........too many guys try to tuck right in close to that shoulder and that is flirting with disaster.

Exactly, but this post was not about hitting them right. It is to help us all learn. All I know(IMO) a shoulder shot deer has a high % of not being fond and it sucks. It is just not the place to shoot a whitetail with a bow.

My apoligies for not being clear on my first post. I totally agree, its not the shot you aim for. I too like to shoot slightly back from the shoulder, with the only bone you'll hit being ribs. Giveway more margin for slight error. The shot I had was a slightly quartering toward me shot. I hit forward from where I wanted.

However, i'm totally confused about a 4" thick bone in the shoulder area of a deer. I never came across a bone that heavy in a deer. Care to elaborate?

I agree 100% with you, Atlas if we could get you in a carbon suit, or me out of one we could be hunting partners. LOL

Atlas,
You've got some monster deer if the bones are that heavy!:D[8D]:D;)

haha, atlas, maybe I mistook this part of your post

For those of you who think that having a shoulder hit gives you little hope at finding the deer, I would have to disagree. It all depends on the type of broadheads you are using and your trackng skills. With those in your favor, you have a decent chance of finding the deer.

I guess you did.

Circumference=Diameter * 3.14

Diameter=2 * Radius

4" round/3.14= 1.27 (A 4" round bone would have a 1.27" "thickness")

Hope this helps.
