So I decided to give it a couple hours this AM before work. I decided to try something a little different with the funny wind. We have this place where a hedgerow cuts a corn field in two. It's more than a hedgerow, but no big trees for stands. There's a ditch/mini water run off that runs thedown the middle of it. The place is anywhere from 20-50 yards wide. There are a couple places they prefer to cross going to the woods. So I grab a dove seat and sneak out the ditch settling in with my feet in the water and my back against an eroded out tree root. I'm in what you'd call head defilade. I have a trail 19 yards to myleft and another about 15 to my right. There's some obstructions that hide me yet I can see anything coming from where I expect them.
It's 20 minutes until first light. THere's water babbling over some rocks but I hear cornstalks being busted. It gets closer, and closer. COME ON DAYLIGHT. NOw I hear cornstalks on both sides of me. Dang, won't it ever get light. Surely I can see them if I get lower. NOTHING! Come on daylight.
OH OH.... something is right behind me. Did that deer cross the ditch in the dark? Dang it's close. Come on Daylight. Suddenly the bushes to my left about 5 yards just explode with a flurry of activity. There's a knocked down small tree there. I see something move against the skyline. When will it get light? DANG.... two racoons 5 yards away playing tag. What a downer.
30 minutes after good daylight I hear something flying through the cornstalks coming my way. WOAH big boy. This little 50 pound weakling explodes from the corn and slams it to halt at a distance of 7 yards. He looks back where he came from and goes tearing off down the ditch and back out into the corn. When will they ever cut this dang corn. Between the raccoons and the energizer weakling I've had enough and leave at 8:30 for work. Those raccopns had me going for a good 20 minutes.
