Poison Ivy/Oak remedies
Well I spent the weekend in E.TN and decided I wanted my stand in a tree that vine was in. I cut the vine out and am paying for it now. My head, face, and arms from wrists to biceps are covered, eyes are half swollen shut, and itching like all get-out, and have some secondary spots on by chest from scratching before I broke out.
Im applying calimine lotion every hour and taking benedryl often, but looking for something more. Anyone here have any good fixes? A friend of mine found some soap when she was pregnant that fixed her up, but she doesnt remember what it was called. She said it was about $35 for 1oz. Ill take any help that I can get on this... Clobex. Gets rid of the stuff in about a day. And it doesnt take much at all. Like, a dime will do your whole back.

use the ole heat treatment. Get in the shower and turn on the hot water. Its the best thing about poison oak. It feels so good and thats no joke! Ive also put vinegar on it. Never tried that clobex..sounds like good stuff.

Pretty sure its over the counter. My mom got it when she had real bad poison ivy, along with steroids. If its not OTC, a dermitologist(spelling) can get it for you no problem. But, im 90% sure you can just go buy it.

I'm a confirmed poison ivy gettin' mutha! I've tried it all and no matter what you do, once you've got it, you've got it and nothing but time makes it go away...generally 7-10 days from break-out you'll be back to normal...days 2-5 are the worst. The best advice is to not get it...I always love hearing that one but its the truth. You have to know what to look for and after many, many years of getting it, I know but sometimes actions require that you put yourself in harms way and deal with it and hanging stands is one such action. Make sure you wash everything you touched since you made contact with the juice...shoes, socks, steering wheel, door knobs, hat, clothes, gloves...everything. It is a fact that the juice can cause a rash for up to a year or longer and no...scratching does not spread it and the ooze doesn't spread it either...that is a myth. When you think you've exposed yourself to the plant, wash off in cool water thoroughly...no soap! Soap only spreads it around and can make it worse. No hot water because it opens your pores and makes it worse. Cool water from head to toe for several minutes and then you can add a bit of heat and then soap and shampoo but the cool water initially dilutes the juice and washes it off which can help to escape the weeds wrath or at least minimalize it. Good luck!!!!!

Poison Ivy likes my face.
I would suggest anyone who's highly allergic (like myself) go take the series of steroid shots that is supposed to make you immune to it. (I should take my own advice.) I got some prescribed steroid cream for mine that works well. But, I've also had it severe enough that I've had to go to the ER and get shots. I should do that soon...beats the heck out of getting poison ivy all the time. |

I went through those series of shots for two years in a row and still got the junk so now I spare myself the sore rump and just try to be smart but inevitably I still get it. |

ZANFAL Go to the drug store and pick up a tube of this. It's expensive at 30 bucks a tube, but if you follow the directions the itch will be gone for ever in 5 min, and the rash will heal completely in a couple of days. I get poisen Ivy/oak several times a year and this Zanfal stuff really does work.

RE: Poison Ivy/Oak remedies
Get a tube of hydrocortisone 1% cream (Cortaid or generic), it will dry it up very quickly and it's OTC and cheap . Calamine lotion is the most useless remedy for poison ivy or oak that I've ever tried , I'll never figure out why it's so popular .

RE: Poison Ivy/Oak remedies
Rubbing Alcohol. It stings like crap at first but relieves the itching and starts the drying out processa lot quicker. Wash your hand every time you touch an infected spot to prevent spreading it.

RE: Poison Ivy/Oak remedies
I had it real bad last week. Tried the steroid pills that you take over 6 days. They got rid of the original sites pretty quick. But i still have some itching, not too bad.
Best part is I now can draw my bow at 70# instead of 60# and can carry way more stuff into the woods |
RE: Poison Ivy/Oak remedies
just bite the bullet and spring for the shot. I get it every spring and fall and it spreads like wildfire. My wife is a nurse so I just go to the Dr. office and no more posion ivy. I have had the pills in the past but they dont work as fast as the shot, the steroid creams are nice but just about as $$$ as a shot. I get the for free though :D

RE: Poison Ivy/Oak remedies
There's used to be a product out called "Tech Nu" or Technu, something like that. It was a wash that you could use right after coming in contact with the stuff. I think if you washed with this stuff witin a few hours of contacting the poison, it would help to break up the oils. When I was a summer laborer for a power plant in college, they made us kids use it while trimming weeds and stuff. The kids who got it bad, didn't get it so bad after using this stuff. Just a couple spots on the hands and that was it.
Hey, you gotta stay away from the fuzzy vines...:D You can get poison all year 'round. |
RE: Poison Ivy/Oak remedies
I use stuff called ZANFEL...its over the counter and like you said it is costly...it works great though; gone in a day or so
