couldnt believe it, first i went to my stand this year earlier and i noticed quad tracks right under it, huh i thought, so then i found a gut pile about 50 yrds away sunday and i checked on the stand and there was blood 20 yard away,huh, so today i put the jeep in 4wd and went out! first stand a 12 yr old boy, told him to get lost and found out his dad was in my other stand, so thats were i went,,,, so anyways i tear him a new @##$$$% so i parked to see were they came from and here comes johnny yuppie in his hummer like he's god and the 2 guys come over to me, this is when being 6-4 250 helps out,,, the one says you scared my son whats your problem! what? i didnt swear or yell i said get out of my stand, and wheres your dad! im like thats my stand is that the thing to teach kids?? hes like i was out here everyday last year and you didnt use them at all, im like so what, what if the winds perfect and i get out of work w/ a game plan, winds right and want to use "MY" stand and your in it?? then he started w/ the you dont have permission crap, i have it but he says a developer just bought it and he has permission so i should pull my stands,,,,yeah! good thing i never got out of my jeep! id be in jail! im like im out here all summer cutting brush,putting in stand etc and you just walk in and take over! im like let me see your land owner permission form?? where is it?? the other thing is this kid was like 12, i bet cant pull a legal, i think 45 lb bow in ny back, not that im against kids hunting but he was very small arms like twigs w/ a coat on, so the kid gets on a quad and drives over 2 me and says sorry for using your stand, im like no your not because you wouldnt have used it in the first place,,,, i need a beer!

Wow, I was a nervous wreck just reading about your experience..har har. Nothing worse than someone who would have the nerve to use another's stand. Happened to me 2 years ago so I sympathize. Glad you were able to keep your cool enough to not do anything rash. Don't you wish there was a special "season" on people like that?? :D

Well that bites, you were definatly in the right ! but....
Maybe you could have dealt with the kid better,
you said he did apologize.After all he didn't know better when his dad tells him it's all right,It was the dadthat got him in trouble.
At 12 or so are you going to tell your dad you don't think it's right to use someones stand or not, if he tells you to.
Maybe if you said to him that "it's not right to use other peoples things
without permission no matter what your dad say's."
then tell him it's not his fault his dad should know better!!

This might have made a better impression on the kid,while teaching him a valuble lesson his lame father should have done already!
After all children only learn what they are taught.

Ohhh man I hate reading about that, especially since I know how much work it is picking the spot, clearing it out and all, and then somebody just comes and takes it from you. I'm fifteen, and thinking back when I was twelve I do think it'd be kind of hard, even now almost, to go against what your father tells you to, even if it's wrong. Not saying he didn't deserve a "little talking to." hahaha

been there had that done to me. it was a bad day for him.to make things worse,everwhere we went for a couple weeks we would run into the same guy.he would apolize over and over.
I don't think he will ever use any one's stuff again.

I would not stand for that either. I would never consider getting
into a stand that is not mine no matter how much it is used. They new
it was wrong and were going to do it until they got busted. Too bad the
dad was setting a bad example for his boy.

I think you did the right thing. If the kid's dad isn't going to teach him hunting do's and dont's, someone has to. I would be afraid to use someone's stand for that reason of being caught. Not saying I would but that would make my mind up not to.

i agree that you could have probably handled the kid better...it wasn't his fault it was his dads.
the dad knew it was wrong so he's the one who should have got the butt chewin'.
so what's going to happen now? did they sell the land to a developer? hopefully you won't have any more issues with those guys but stay level headed (and in your truck;)) if you do run into them.

and i'm not crackin' on you by saying that you could have handled the kid better....it's just my opinion because he's just a kid...the dad was truly at fault...hope you can see my point without wantin' to tear me a new one.:D

my neighbor/hunting buddy has been hunting one woods for years before anyone else was alowed in it and knew where the deer's trail was year after year and this fall when he went to put his stand up someone had put a stand in the tree he had hunted so he set up down this trail just a little farther but this guy must have seen the stand and broke one of his tree steps off so he couldn't get in his stand but he always carries extra so he was ok
also the first year i was hunting my uncles own some nice woods in my area and there are usually nice bucks year after year because they are not severely pressured but this kid that lives in town and goes to my school has a dad that hardly ever asks for permission to hunt always shoots nice bucks because of this stalked down this creek and found a huge 11 point buck that i had seen earlier in the summer and was after but he took it in the youth season because his dad told him to trespass with him onto private property and took this buck that should never have been taken by either of them but they don't get caught and always shoot these deer now this year i have 2 deer that i would mount because they are once in a lifetime bucks but supposedly this guy has seen them down the creek from these woods so i will have to try and get this buck or catch him tresspassing before he harvests this one from me

I totally understand you're frustration and i've been there, but you gotta understand the kid was only doing what his dad told him. It's totally the dad's fault. Try not to blame the kid, I know it's hard, but i'm sure the only reason he sat there is cause his dad said "let's go hunting" and the kid was all revved up. He may not have even known he was sitting in your stand, for all he knew his dad prolly told him it was his. I'd of just beat the ---- out of the dad and that's it. Good luck with it though, hopefully you get it worked out. If not call the DNR they'll take care of it.

Intresting thing happened to me also. While hunting in N.C. on a cold frosty morning I rode my bike to my treestand about 2 miles in the forest on a closed to off roadmotor traffic. As I rode my bike in at about half an hour before sunrise I noticed some other bike tracks in the frost. I noticed a bike where I usually put mine and hiked to my stand following a set of footprints in the frost. AsI get to my stand there is this guy sitting in it and I walk to him on a still,wet and foggy, morning. I approached him with my 870 over my shoulder and he was waving me off. I walking towards him like a man on a mission. I asked him, "what are you doing in my stand"? He said 'this isn't your stand, this is my friends stand and he put me in it"? I said, " I don't think so and your going to have to leave. At this point, the morning hunt is already blown and I'm pissed. I'm within 15 yrds of him and he said something esle negatory about coming down. I noticed he had a rifled scope laying across his lapp, at that time I demanded him to get the hell out of my stand, NOW !!!! I punch the safteyon the 870 so loud he could hear it as Icraddled it to my chest waiting for his move. If I'm not going to hunt out of it he sure as hell won't. Deer or no deer. After a brief moment he grabbed his back pack and climbed down onMY screw in tree steps. I was so pissed andasI watched him go out of sight, I climbed the tree and pulled my stand. I was hunting this special buck for 2 seasons. That really sucked.
I don't really mind him hunting my stand (maybe)if I'm not there, but don't tell me its your stand and continue hunting out of it. That dog ain't going to hunt.

yea. i know exactly what you mean. only thing is that im the land owner. ive had guys on my land say that they had permission from the land owner. other than me its my dad and he didnt give em permisssion cuz i am and avid hunter and hes not so he tells everyone to talk to me about it. all i said was i am the land owner and dont appricate being lied to and said i dont want to see them around here agin. good thing i caught them. that was a good spot and one of my fam members ended up takin a buck with a 17" spread and real tall tines.. the nerve of some ppl.

Why does everything have to go right to gun safeties and threats? I understand the frustration and feeling of being wronged but for cryin' out loud these aren't paintball guns we're carrying.
Snapping off a safety takes things to a whole new level, and what's gonna happen the next time when the other guy calls your bluff?:eek:

Easy solution to the problem is to engrave your name on the bottom of the stand...under the seat on the frame.
So the next time someone pulls the "No it's my buddies stand" it'll be as simple as........."Look under the seat, read the name, get down, have a nice day."

I personally would have gotton name and indentification for the dad. Name only for the kid. Pressed charges on the dad. Let the kid go, but it would definitly scare him.

Matt, maybe not the right approach and wouldn't recommend it for some, but when someone steals something from me I take it very serious and also as a threat. Weather it be a tree stand or a cooler from my truck or a back pack thatI may left on the ground, or a stereo from my home, if you steal from me and I have a weapon in my hand, there could be a possible problem. I don't believe for one minute he had a friend that showed him my stand, I believe he was a thief and he was fortunate he didn't bluff me and try to take what is mine. It was not a good scene to be in and I don't like being in those circumstances either, as this is what actually happened. I'm not going to look the other way saying I wish I would have recorded my serial numbers and walk away. I had to deal with the situation at that time. Its easy to sit back in a room relaxed and properly anayalis a situation and say that this is the right approach as opposed to actually comfronting it in a surprised confrontation.

wow kinda hard on the kid I am sure he was only doing what his father told him to do. But I do agree with you about them being your stands.

One question were they bowhunting? If so the kid needs to be 14 years old to hunt in NY.

Also in NY the bow doesn't have to be 45lbs.

I have to agree with #1 predator on this ,the kid is only hunting with his dad and has no idea that the stand's belong to anyone else ,soI don't believe it's his fault at all .I have to sympathiize with this juvenile to a point .Hopefully he totally understand's your position and is a little more aware next time .I'd of appreciated the young fella's apolagy and I'd of explained it to him why your upset .
But then again, I also understand your position in all of this ,I would have definately held his father 100% responsible for his action's . I know trespasser's don't usually give a rat's a>> about who's property they trespass on or who's stand's they steal or use ,so I certainly agree with your stand on him. I'm just afraid the kid had no idea of what was going on in the least. At least the kid was brought up somewhat right to have the sense to say he was sorry ,but then that's up to you whether you believe him or not .

Who owns the land? If this guy just bought ityou might very well be the one that's been tresspassing! It is not the landowners responsibility to let anyone know that the property has changed hands..even if you have written permission from the previous owner.

yes i looked into it the kid plays soccer w/ a friends son also 12 and 14 is the age limit, i talked to dec and he said hes gonna bust them, although the kid can legally say he's hunting turkey,small game,that is o,k, for 12 yr olds. its private land owned by a developer and its like a park,hikers dog walkers cross x skiers, quads,dirt bikes and not posted at all!

I would just wait until they went in to hunt again and I would find his vehicle and total it. I would slash the tires, including the spare if I could get to it, pour sugar in the gas tank, dump concentrated deer in estrus urine into the vents, pour brake fluid all over the paint, break the side mirrors off, paint killer and murderer on the side of the Hummer (so they thought that PETA did it) and then bust the windows out with a slingshot after I was done with everything else, because that would probably set the alarm off. That guy would not only not hunt in MY stand again that year, but he would probably not hunt ANYWHERE that year LMAO.

i understand ur angry but dont agree at all how you handled the kid. the kid even apologize at 12 years old to some 6 foot whatever 200 + whatever you said you were guy. Not right at all. This post isnt justifying anything they did was right, there wrong but be the bigger person and not physicallywhen it comes to a kid just doing what his dad tells him. I got alot of respect for the kid and if he would of been in my stand he would be all right in my book being a man at 12 years old and apologizing. Good hunting to all and God bless.

-If he had the permission to hunt there and you didn't then I don't blame him at all. You would be the trespasser.

-If it were public land here in KY you have to pull your stands everyday so if someone left them out there then they would be free game for anyone to use.

I know where you are coming from. Last weekend, I went to one of my stands on private property and the ladder tie down straps were unhitched and then placed back so they would look like they were hooked up with a quick glance. My stand's safety pin was pulled out of the slot and the strap there was loosened andmy gear pull rope was cut. I didn't get a chance to chew *$$ though.

As for the kid, a little hard on him I think. He didn't know better. Dad should have gotten full throttle for both and the boy's apology accepted. But I know how things can get when you get site jumpers.

Unreal, however, this can and will happen to about anyone. Just a shame that we even have to read about this type of thing. I will be harsh and say it was even a shame how you dealt with that kid....... Defuse situation's like this, don't add fuel to the fire. I know it's easy for me to say, because like you I would be very upset to have this happen to me. Just bother's me how you dealt with the kid.....
