Harvested a buck today!
This season has been really tough this far. Where I shot a nice 8pt last year is no longer available to me to hunt. The other spot I hunt (4.5 acres) that I planted some biologic on and had nice picts of deer ended up getting flooded out from all the ran we got, so to say the least its beenvery frustrating.
This morning it all changed though. I had the thought going into this year I would pass on all smaller bucks in hopes of finding another decent 8pt or bigger. With the way my season has been going (hadn't seen a deer all year)I was bsing with my buddy (rackluster) and saying on the way up north for our 2nd annual Emily hunt that if a smaller buck walks into range he may be in trouble. Well we get out to the woods and my buddy and I split up and after I get up in the tree I notice him getting closer. He ends up setting up close to me which with the thick forest in the dark its easy to do.By him setting up close to me it ended up being the 2nd best memoryof the trip. He was either setting out sent or looking for the perfect climber tree when all of the sudden I hear a huge crash and a millisecond later he is flat on the ground with his flashlight bouncing in front of him. I nearly pee'ed my pants laughing. Ok back to the hunt. At about 07:30 I noticed a deer to my left about 50 yards away. There ended up being 3. Two does and a buck.I didn't realize the one was a buck yet at this point. Two of the deer starting feeding slowly away from me and the other worked its way towards me. At about 30 yards I noticed horns, so I put the glass on him and found that it was a pretty tall 4pt. As he came in a few more steps I was getting nervous because he was going to end up straight down wind of me. Sure enough he starts to lift his nose non-stop smelling in the air. He stomped his feet a few times. I am thinking oh great now he is going to bust out of there and I won't get a shot. Just as I get done thinking that he returns back to eating white acorns and comes straight down wind of me at about 18 yards. As he was smelling me, so I thought anyways, I remembered putting BF\Gland on my pull rope for my bow just incase deer came from that direction. That stuff smells so good it makes me want to lick the licking branch. LOL. Back to the shot. I drew back when he was behind a cluster of trees and put the pin on him and let it fly. I saw the arrow enter and remember thinking dang I hit him a little far back. He bolted out of there towards my buddy, and he erped at him and he stopped on a dime. Then he started to walk slowly again making a U in the woods. I waited 40 minutes before checking for my arrow and blood, because when I last saw him he was walking very slow and the tail was doing that good old death wiggle, so I figured if he bedded down close I didn't want to bump him. I get down as quiet as I could and check for my arrow and sure enough I find blood with some guts. DANG it! I go and get my buddy and we search for the arrow and when we found the arrow it definitely had confirmed what I found on the oak leaves. So we decided to check where I saw him last to mark blood and we were going to get out of the woods as quiet as we could. As I am marking the blood my buddy goes, "well he didn't go to far at all." So I am asking him do you see him over and over and he wouldn't point him out. Then finally I see him too, then I let a nice little yell. He ended up only going about 80 yards from my stand. Sorry for the long story, but this 4pt is a nice trophy for me just because of the memories I will have behind it.I suppose thats why all love to bowhunt. I am going to do a European mount on him and put him next to my 8pt that I had mounted last year.
This will also give team 29 some pts.
