RE: how many people quite
I've completely given up hunting with a gun for anything butfeathered animals and varmits.
|
RE: how many people quite
I gave up rifles in 1979. Bow only.
|
RE: how many people quite
It's been 4 years since I fired a gun....... I went about 3 years before that of bow only and then used the gun for a couple years and now I'm back to bow only......
|
RE: how many people quite
I haven't given it up yet but it simply does not compare to the bow. Gun season for me has become a time to drink beer, play cards and talk stupid with the boys. My stand becomes a good place to take a nap so I can do it again that night.
|
RE: how many people quite
I haven't given up but I don't enjoy being out in the woods with a gun. I mmuch prefer a bow, I may not even go out with a gun this year.
|
RE: how many people quite
I prefer the stick and string, but i use a rifle shotgun and muzzleloader.
|
RE: how many people quite
I use my shotgunmaybe once or twice a season for asmall game or dove hunt. For any deer season I grab the bow.
|
RE: how many people quite
I still gun hunt, but it doesn't get me excited like bow hunting does.
I was thinking about it on stand tonight, and i think that bow hunting will make you a better all-around hunter, far more than any other type of hunting. |
RE: how many people quite
Big game with bow only for me.
|
RE: how many people quite
Never have gun hunted big game. I started bow hunting at 13 and have done it since. Guns are for feathered animals for me
|
RE: how many people quite
I'll be 16 in 28 days and I gave up gun hunting as soon as i shot my first doe with a bow last year. Gun huntin is too easy.(or it is compared to bowhunting, nothing like a challenge;))
|
RE: how many people quite
I agree with Patriot15, I am on my way to giving it up all together. I like doing the traditional gun whitetail season but that is about it.
|
RE: how many people quite
I have given up gun hunting totally.I am trying for Geese this year with my bow.I know my first one will be mounted with the rest of my trophy's.Most of my friends and others look at me like I am crazy because I want to hunt them with my Bow.I do not think I am ready for duck yet.but I might give it a shot or two when I am out there.
|
RE: how many people quite
I'll probably never quit gun hunting because I still enjoy it. Bow hunting is my favorite by far but I just enjoy deer hunting altogether. If they'd bring in a spear season on them, I'd probably do that too. As far as a challenge goes, early bow season isn't as much of a challenge to me as the second week of gun season or muzzleloader season. They're so wild by then it's tough to get within 100 yards of a deer. I might also add that I learned more about deer hunting with a bow that I ever could with a gun. A bow teaches patience which is vital to successful deer hunting. Good luck to everyone this year.

RE: how many people quite
i use bow, shotgun, and muzzleloader. the satisfaction for me is knowing i out thought that deer in my success. no matter what i used to harvest.
|
RE: how many people quite
we've established a bow and shotgun only rule for hunting on our land. lol
|
RE: how many people quite
I didn't give up gun hunting. I was taken out of it. Some swine broke into my house about 25 years agoand stole all my guns. I never replaced them. Got a shotgun for bird hunting and that's it. Sometimes I miss my rifles... but not often.
|
RE: how many people quite
I still hunt gun season because since my father and grandfather do not hunt archery it is one of the few times each year I get to go hunting with them. My grandfather is 78 so I know that there will come a day when I will no longer have this opportunity so I enjoy it now. So if not for my dad and grandfather I would probably hunt bow only.
|
RE: how many people quite
I remember when I first started gun hunting when I was 10. I would never get any sleep the night before the opener. Since I started bow hunting I've lost all desire to gun hunt for deer. I never get excited, even though there is still that chance to tag a monster. I still gun hunt, mostly b/c of "pier" pressure from family but I'd much rather bow hunt. It's funny, the past couple of years I can never sleep before the bow opener!

RE: how many people quite
I've always hunted with a muzzleloader in the past, and this is my first season bowhunting. I took it up mainly because I wanted to have a longer season to hunt because of my very busy schedule (work full time, part time college and a 8 month old baby at home eat up a lot of time). I also really enjoy archery. But now that I've been out a couple times I've found that I really like bowhunting compared to muzzleloading. It's also the first time I've hunted from a treestand, which I also really like a lot. However, I don't think that I'll completely give up muzzleloading, and if I lived out west and were hunting elk or mulies, I'd probablyuse a rifle. I have no intentionwhatsoever ofhunting with a shotgun duringIowa's shotgun season.Too manyyahooswiththe mentality that if it moves, shoot it.No thanks.

RE: how many people quite
I still gun hunt and allways will. I enjoy it too much to give it up. Infact I enjoy all types of hunting. They are all unique in their own ways.
I have done both and still to this day will tell you that hitting a 3in circle at 300yds with any rifle/scope combination is much tougher than hitting a 3in circle at 30yds with a bow. 200yds and in with any rifle or slug gun is a no brainer and this falls into my Illinois slug gun season. But smaller game out to 300yds and beyond is just as exhilerating as an up close and personal shot with my bow. |
RE: how many people quite
haven't quit rifle hunting yet... but thats definately where I'm heading!!
|
RE: how many people quite
I haven't pulled the trigger on a rifle in over 3 years. Now shotguns on the other hand, well... I did kill about 150 doves before bow season opened. And I might get in a few waterfowl and quail hunts.
|
RE: how many people quite
I have no idea where my slugs are for my shotgun. My rifle shells I thnk I could find. My bow is in my truck! Bow only is the way to go.
|
RE: how many people quite
Never! I will never give up hunting and target shooting with my firearms however, I prefer to hunt deer with my bow. I started hunting with my bows because I like hunting without seeing other hunters surrounding me. It has definately become some of my favorite hunting but I will continue to use and compete in competitionswith my firearms. ;)

RE: how many people quite
i dont think i will ever give up gun hunting because i enjoy all types of hunting. however bow hunting is much more fun than gun because it is more challenging and the woods arent crawling with hunters. but the best part of gun hunting is being with the guys and getting stupid all weekend. usually if i get a deer with a gun it is an added bonus. bow hunting is by far better than gun.
im not trying to knock anybody but i dont think i would ever hunt with a rifle. its just not as challenging. IN MY Opinion. (except varmints) |
RE: how many people quite
With the exception of a short five year period I have been an exclusive bowhunter a total of 43 years. Gun hunting could never match up to the excitement or challenge of bowhunting.
|
RE: how many people quite
There are just too many people in the woods during gun season. I like the archery season because you feel like your "out there" because you don't see many people.
|
RE: how many people quite
I gave it up for awhile and then I started hunting with a T/C contender pistol and also a muzzleloader during the normal rifle season to make it more of a challengetokeep me out in the woods. I just love being out there and enjoying everything the Good Lord gave us!!!
|
RE: how many people quite
Chalk up another one who bow hunts only.
|
RE: how many people quite
I've started handgun hunting when I take a gun for deer. I'll also use a shotgun during a our late shotgun season as well. The vast majority of my time is spent carrying a bow. Now for stuff other than deer I still use guns quite regularly.
|
RE: how many people quite
I still hunt with a gun and muzzleloader, I do enjoy bowhunting much better.
|
RE: how many people quite
I use my bow during bowseason. I love the quietness of the early season. During muzzleloader season, I don't own a muzzleloader, so I still use my bow. Then for general firearms season, I'll use the old 30-30 or the Rem 870 depending on my mood or whatever the county ordinances are for where I am hunting.
|
RE: how many people quite
i hadnt hunted with a gun from 1994 until 2002 when I went out with dad for his last hunt.. Then it seems the last 2 deer seasons I take the gun out for a walk. I always liked archery hunting. Its just too easy with a gun.
|
RE: how many people quite
I still rifle hunt, but don't really focus on it unless I am in Vermont. Bowhunting is too good in the area I hunt in PA for me to take vacation off work for rifle, I generally use vacation up during archery season and then hunt the occasional saturday with my rifle. I do think this year I will be spending more time with my muzzleloader in NY. I have access to a great patch in NY now and will only have 1 weekend during archery, so I may catch a weekend in rifle season and then hunt muzzleloader season hard.
|
RE: how many people quite
I still gun hunt for the simple reason you can't bow hunt during Ill shotgun season. I just can't stand my buddies out there hunting without me...........
|
RE: how many people quite
I still shoot my guns, rifle hunt for deer, shotguns for various winged game, but I renewed my interest in guns about 5 years ago when I started reloading shells for all my guns, it helpsadd some satisfaction to the hunt.
|
RE: how many people quite
Been bow only now for the past 23-24yrs. I found out long ago I could hunt deer in places that gun hunters couldn`t.
Although I did take my 10yr oldson last yr with a gun and he did get his first deer opening day;)He has sence been after me to take him with me bowhunting, HE THINKS HE`S READY:eek: but he`s not!Notjust yet anyways but a little more practicing and he`ll be ready maby by next yr? |
RE: how many people quite
RTA47- I hear ya on the 10 yr old. Since I started back into bowhunting this year mine has been WEARING ME OUT about a bow. I think Santa knows whats coming this year.
I hunt rifle, pistol, bow, and sometimes muzzleloader for big game. Shotguns are for things with feathers or things that go bump in the night. I live in open country so I doubt I will ever get away from rifle and pistol completely. Spot and stalk is still one of my favorite ways to hunt. I have been into precision reloading and long range shooting for years. Praire dogs at 300-400 yds with 15 mph crosswind ain't no pushover either. This was my first year to bowhunt seriously, and I've already taken a doe for warmup, but waiting for it to cool off a little more before I go after big boy. Bowhunting seems to be very addicting to me but I seem to go through phases with things also. My 15" Encore in .260 Rem. hasn't been out on a hunt in a couple of years now but I dusted it off the other day and this might be the year it comes back... Who knows, I love it all, don't want to give up any of it. |
