Just go to the last place you found blood, and make small circles.
I'm shure you know that though.
A buck will almost alwaysrun to his bedding area or to water.
After 300 yards he won't have too much farther to run before expiring.
From your pic,the shot looks to have hit (entrance)on the right side of the neck??
If so ,the main artery is located there(that's why the blood was dark)
blood going to the heart is darker(lack of oxygen) so if it was a steady trail
then he won't be too far.
so try looking for sign( running tracks, blood, pushed down grass, broken twigs,ect...)in small circles extending outward from the last place you seen blood, try useing toilet paper to mark limbs above the blood trail, this will help you see the patternin the direction of travel.last ,but not least
even get on your knees to look.

Predator is right, that deer is dead, you just have to make small circles from the last spot, the only way that deer lived is if it was just a heavy bleeder, and if the kid didn't hit an artery, make small circles, and if you can get three or four buddies to help you, make sure the kid knows he didn't do anything that none of us have ever done before, just take the trail slow, tell him we're all pulling for him!

I'm pullin' for him... I shot a doe last year, found blood about 70 yds from where I shot, tracked for EVER, never found her, but she made it across the big ditch, so she still had plenty of energy, we think she was dead, but we lost the blood trail and after 2 days of searching we chalked it up to "that sucks"...
I shot one tonight, hubby was in his stand, texted me on my phone and told me not to follow because the deer needed to go lay down, so I went back to the truck, passed a deer on the way through, I walked the bean field so I didn't disturb it if it laid down somewhere, but the deer I passed was through thick brush and all I could see was it's head, may have been my deer, but I have no idea. He is out tracking right now and if I know him, he'll stay out until 2am if he hasn't found it yet... then he will call in sick to work tomorrow to track some more... wishin' the kid luck, I know how the "uncertainty" feeling is... Alright guys, i kind of figured the buck was dead to. I will be heading out in the morning to find his deer for him. I HOPE. His face was hilarious, he looked at me and said oh my god i got him, with eyes the size of baseballs. LOL

I have been looking since about 6 am and it is now 1 pm and i cant find the deer. I have looked everywhere. Only thought is them maybe he ran into the standing corn. I dont know, he has me stumped. I mean i have look for about 1 hour last night and then 7 hours today, what do i do? keep looking or just focus on getting the kid back out and bowhunting, he told me this morning that he doesn't know if he is ever going again.

Look in the standing corn if he's nowhere else. If not...and you can't find him...well, it happens. It sucks that it's his first deer, try to encourage him and help him stay positive. I did not find the first deer I ever shot with my bow. A doe, paunch shot, trailed blood for about 5 hundred yards ended up at a river, too wide to cross...that was about 8 yrs ago. It happens to the best of them.[&o]
