You absolutely do not have to!!!

You absolutely do not have to add the lines..."I might catch some flak for her size..." or " I know he's not the largest buck..." when telling your stories and sharing your pictures on this board!!!!! ESPECIALLY when it is your very first deer!!!!

There has been some very fortunate new and young hunters who have scored and all of them add these lines to their posts because they think the"Big Bucks Only"crowd is going to bash them. If you are one of the LOSERS who posts the "awfully small" or "not much of a buck" posts among the dozens of congratulations which you know these young hunters keep checking back on and get excited all over again when they read the kind words... well then do us all the favor of not calling yourself a hunter or "archer" and go back to cutting old ladies in line and yelling at kids for "playing to loud" and slamming the door in ladies faces......

Thanks for your post.

My first bow kill was on the small side last Saturday. Both my huning buddy and processor gave me a hard time. I took it all in stride. I told my hunting buddy that if it did not have spots it was going down earlier that morning. First of all it was my FIRST bow kill. Second the smaller deer actually taste better. Third I hunt for meat not for antlers. Finally now that I have my first out of the way I can be more selective. (which I will)

RE: You absolutely do not have to!!!

MD you dont have to worry bout being selective. if it still gets your blood flowing shooting a little doe then be it. as long as you are happy with you harvest thats really all that matters. me personally if i am in the mood for a nice tender dao i will still shoot a small one. so basically MD you shoot whatever you want as long as YOU are happy with it

I am usually selective about what I take when I gun hunt. I don't shoot BB or small bodied spikes which are obviously young. I have no problem shooting mature does because we have too many in MD and where I hunt does are unlimited. Once my freezer has enough meat I like to donate meat to the less fortunate.

For me it more about the hunt and not the kill.

I'll shoot spots over any deer except for a huge deer. They tend to be perfect grilling size and I would hate the thought of them suffering out in the cold winter.

I had a choice between a mom and her two yearlings and took the smallest of the three only because I thought it might not make it throught the winter...I wouldn't take mom either....so what...backstraps withportabella mushrooms and garlic sauce...mmmmm. Process the deer yourself and save the money for a few cold ones.

Couldn't agree more and that is one of the reasons I always post the "Be Proud of What you Shoot" thread at the top of the forum at the beginning of every hunting season.

I did the same thing in the youth forum last season. I am trying to get a hold of Redhawk or someone that can post my post for this year at the top in the youth forum.

Very well said! They all count one especially when taken with a bow, and if they are small then you have to be that much better of a shot to place the arrow where it needs to be!

RE: You absolutely do not have to!!!

Good thoughts! I got a one this past weekend. When people ask how many points it had,I tell them it was a doe. They say, "Oh." When I tell them it was with a bow and that you are allowed does during bow season because there are too many, theyseem to be enlightened a little.

Many of the people I work with are not hunter and don't really know about deer management. It gives me a chance to explain hunting and the benefits of hunting. They sure don;t mind eating it when I bring it to work. They love the sausage balls I bring.

RE: You absolutely do not have to!!!

I've been saying the same thing in all my QDM bashing for years. I tell every young, new or unsuccessful new bowhunter.... JUST SHOOT SOMETHING. True I don't want you shooting bambi, but shoot something that's legal. Doe, spike, ...whatever. Then do it again a few times and learn what archery and all that goes with it is about. THEN, if you decide you want to wait on ONLY MACHO BUCK, so be it. But don't you be telling the rest of the world what to shoot. It's just as hard to whack those first few, no matter what variety they are, as it is to shoot Macho Buck. And hey, it's suppose to be FUN!!!!! It's not fun if you're shamed into holding out for something that may not even exist in your hunting grounds. You shoot it..... I"ll jump up and down and be happy for you. BUT, I'm getting old and can't jump as high as I once could so I need some help here.[8D]

RE: You absolutely do not have to!!!

I personally will not shoot a small buck. Ive shot enough deer in my life so i dont want to. However I will shoot a doe with out reservations for the meat. It is my girlfiends first year this year, and I told her whatever ya want take it. I dont give a dam if it is a 50lb fawn. First deer, break the ice and understand what this all about. My son can hunt in 2 yrs he will brought up the same way. Dont be shooting at every critter that comes by, but take the first oportunity that rises.

Great post! As long as it legal with your state game laws...take it, and be proud of it. Don't let others get you down. I'll shoot does all year and take 1 or 2 bucks if one comes my way.

IMO, any kill with a bow is well earned. Big bucks only add up to big money for the opportunity to hunt them.

RE: You absolutely do not have to!!!

This is the exact thing that the ego maniacs miss the boat on.............you have a bunch of people that post things like "I know it's not huge but".........as if they feel like they need to apologize in advance so everyone knows their is no need to pile on. What a shame. I have NEVER and will NEVER feel the need to justify what I shoot to someone........EVER! I hunt for me and no one else. I also don't give a frog's fat one what anyone else does as long as it is legal and safe. I will be the first to give high fives all day long to anyone who had success in the woods.....no matter if it is the size of a dog or a moose.......if you are happy then I am happy for you.

Having said that............to me the people who shoot something and then feel bad about it because it isn't what they wanted to shoot but just figured they better shoot something because time was running out are just as goofy. DON'T shoot something just to shoot it..........shoot what brings you happiness and gets your heart racing and drives you to get out of bed every morning and hit the stand. Don't shoot something and then say "I shouldn't have shot it" That is just dumb.

This will be my 19th year in the woods and I have killed a bunch of critters. In the last 3 years I have killed a 4pt and a 6pt.......then a 13pt.........then a 4pt and a 6pt.......with 4 does mixed in as well. EVERY single deer had my heart pounding and huge smile on my face when it was over. If they didn't bring out those feelings inside me I wouldn't shoot them. Many guys in my shoes would not have shot any of those bucks.........and that's OK too. It's just not right to decide for someone else what they should or should not be happy with.

I checked in a 4 pt and a 6 month old doe last year at the DEC station.........right in front of a guy with a BIG 'ol 10 pt with double split brow tines. Real nice buck taken off his grampa's farm. I said "nice buck".......he said "you too.........and a couple does (my bro had a doe too)........great morning huh??" We each shared our stories along with a couple others and went on our seperate ways...........everyone was happy and we all had a great time.

Pretty simple concept.

That sums it up pretty well....well said, be happy or simply put, don't shoot it, at least don't make exuses why you did, it's too late......

i mentioned that my doe was on the skinny side but that doesn't mean that she wasn't a trophy in my eyes...any critter i kill (especially with a bow) is a trophy and just because i use adjectives such as small, skinny, little, etc. doesn't mean that i am not a hunter...I AM A HUNTER in every sense of the word!!!

edit: after reading the rest of the replies i do understand what you are saying to a point and i'll admit that i haven't posted a pic of my doe because i didn't want to get cracked on but she is a trophy to me...i also would NEVER crack on a first time hunter no matter what...they have to be encouraged to no end cause we need all the new hunters we can get.

RE: You absolutely do not have to!!!

Hunting (as long as it is within the law) is largly a personal choice and so is a trophy. I had my son with me Saturday afternoon and could of shot a doe at about 20 yards but it had a fawn with it. I told him it would of been okay to shoot it but since it had the fawn we'll wait. I wouldn't chastise anyone else for shooting it. In fact, my very first bow kill was a doe that had a fawn. Its just my personal choice. I think the real trophy isn't the rack that hangs on the wall but the whole hunting experience from the preparation to the harvest to the tall tales years afterwards!

Amen to this thread. QDM seems to be sucking the fun right out of hunting in my state. I'm not saying kill the tiny ones, but if it's legal and you paid for the opertuninty then why wait until he has dentures in his mouth. Live for today, you never know what tomorrow may bring.

Reminds me of why I quit bass fishing years ago. Too much of a rich mans sport.
But guess what,I plan on buying another boat in the spring and am longer concerned about what snide remarks I may hear at the cleaning table. Sure I don't keep every bass, but I like to eat a few every now an then.
Don't like it? go buy your own lake.

i ahve to agree w/yall 110%,,,,,this is my second year huntin with a bow,,,i was lucky enough to take my first deer w/a bow last year after missing 2 does and my string loop comin untied and spookin off another,,,,then the forth time i came to full draw said a pray and let the arrow fly,,,,then when i heard the thump of the arrow hit its mark my heart just let go and i was so happy,,,to me it is just bein in the wood with these magnificent creature that make hunting worth all the time and effort i put into it,,,and when someone bashs someone else for shootin a small deer it make me upset as well,,,cause it aint the size that matter,,what matters is that u is happy with the deer and not second guessing your self for shooting it,,,and if u are then u should not be out there in the woods hunting,,just my .10

Every deer is a trophy in my eye. The small ones are better eating and it is a heck of a lot more work to get the big ones out of the field! Throw 'em over your shoulder and walk out is what my best friend sez.

RE: You absolutely do not have to!!!

I second that agreement. I would personally like to congratulate all the new hunters who have harvested a deer this year especially the youth hunters. Youre the reason this sport is still alive. No matter how big or small the deer is, rack or no rack, buck or doe, remember any deer taken is a trophy. Dont let anyone tell you any different. Ive been hunting for 15 years and have shot alot of deer in that 15 years, but it took till 2002 before i got my first wall hanger buck a 130 class 8 point buck. I worked hard for thebuck all bow season and focused all my attention on him. Was never offered a comfortable shot, bow season ended. I got him opening day of the 2002 Wi Gun Deer season. I cried when I shot him, this was deerI had been working so hard to get all fall, even passed up a big 10 pointer to get this one. Every deer I have shot has been a trophy and each set of hornsI have collected in the past 15 years tell a story. If you shoot a spike buck, mount them horns, mount all the horns you get and remember to take alot of pictures. These are times that youll never want to forget. If you want to mount a doe head go for it. Congrats again and thank you kids. Good luck to thoes who have not harvested their deer yet. Keep it safe and legal.

Here is a picture of my first wall hanger.
