That is the first mule deer that I have ever seen with a whitetails rack. That thing should have been P&Y! Congrats.

Congrats!! he would have been fine if you just peeled the hide off, openned the chest cavity wide and hung him overnight.

YUP, in the 40s he should have been alright until morning. Just hang him where you can get some air around him and prop open the chest cavity. They ice in the chest cavity would help too.

If you hit the heart and it stops pumping... there isn't going to be much blood on the ground. Blood doesn't flow by itself. I always think heart shots are cool, but given my choices I'd miss the heart and just hit both lungs anyday... that way blood is being pumped out as the animal runs. Just makes for easier tracking....especially at night.
