I didn't put up a story as I get tired of the flaming for not shooting a QDM deer that seems prevelant these days.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>Below is a copy and paste from another site that tells the story. I know you QDM guys won't like it... but I needed a deer for the landlord and time was running out on the tag. The landlord allows just my brother, his son and myself to hunt the 2,500 acres... so if he want's something we do it if it's legal. Sorry.,... it's a little long but maybe someone can learn something from it.

Well, NY was interesting to say the least. Arrived Thursday and hung a couple stands. Rained on us hard all day Friday but I toughed it out. It spit a little rain Sat. It rained, rained and rained somemore on Friday. I put on the goretex and sat it out all day. We left the woods for a couple hours but that was it. I did not see &quot;a&quot;,.. any,.. none,... zippo deer on Friday. Sat AM... just a sprinkle now and then(No rain gear needed) but again NO deer. I was hunting back in the woods. My nephew was hunting the fields and saw a bunch.. in fact he botched a shot and lost the doe. Sat afternoon about 2PM I set up on a grown over field. I saw 20 deer but the closest was 200 yards away. Sunday AM same field 2 deer at 400 yards. So at midday I headed back in the woods to look for an afternoon stand a little more to my liking. I absolutely HATE sitting on open fields. I'd really rather not see a deer than see them 200 yards away when I'm bowhunting.

The landlord of the 2,500 acre property we get to hunt free of charge said he'd like a young deer to take to his sister in NY City. He doesn't hunt. My brother told me as long as I was bowhunting on last years tag and it would be no good in 2 days... shoot SOMETHING.

SO ANYWAY,.... I head for the woods at midday Sunday looking for a new stand site. I'm carrying my bow and walk right up on this suicidal deer. He just stood there behind a maple as I walked this old road way. I couldn't believe my eyes but I still managed to function. I went behind some brush, nocked an arrow, clipped on my release, stepped out and this spike(5 or 6 inch spikes) is still standing there. I drew and let go in one motion. 20 yards ..... TWACK.... Deer runs off. I retrieve arrow and it's slimy green smelly. I said NO way. He was angled at me a little.

So, I slowly track for 20 yards or so and find a spot or two of blood. That's it. My nephew was with me. I tracked him by hoof prints in the leaves for a ways and my nephew taps me on the shoulder and points. 40 yards away stands a doe. We're watching her and my spike jumps up from 15 or 20 yards away and takes off into the brush. He'd only gone about 50-75 yards before laying down. Don't know how we missed seeing him. I pick up the foot prints and follow to the bed... no blood in the bed other than a drop or two and a little stomach bile. I followed a couple hops from the bed on the packed hardwoods leaves. The fresh rains helped show off fresh tracks a lot. I keep saying we should back out, but I just wanted to see if he started bleeding a little more. I look up ahead about 40 yards and see a deers butt. We crouched down and the deer steps out, it's the spike. HE wobbles, takes a couple more steps and lays down almost falling on his nose. I motioned to my nephew and we back peddled out of there and left him. I watched the deer while he sneaked out to see if it got up. He backpeddled 40 yards and watched with the binos while I sneaked out. An hour and a half later we walk back in and he's dead. He did get up and turn around once from when we left him as he was facing the other way.

The arrow smashed the upper nuckle joint on the back of the shoulder, entering low in the chest cavity, barely clipping a lung,(I mean just a nick) some major blood vessels and some intestines and out the other side passing below the liver never touching it. Both holes were plugged with green chewed up gobs of junk. The deer didn't bleed a tablespoon of blood on the ground. Darnest thing I ever saw. When we came back in my meat hunting brother and a friend came with us. (they don't bow hunt) As we progressed towards the deer they kept asking where's the blood. I showed them a spot... they said &quot;NO, really... where's the blood&quot;. When I led them to the arrow I'd left at the spot we were last standing when first trailing they said you'll never find this deer. Another 10 yards an I pointed out the deer laying in some brush 30 yards up ahead. All they could say was.... but there isn't any blood. Lucky find for sure but just shows persistance can yield some rewards. The deer never went over 150 yards.

So I filled a tag that ran out in one day and made the landlord happy. Should be tasty for those NY City folks. This was on NYs early bow where you can fill last years unused tags.(last 4 days in Sept) Tuesday the tag would be no good.

SORRY, NO pictures. I took my digital camera out of my pack and left it at my brothers home because of all the rain. I never put it back in my pack. I figured I'd get a picture of it if I brought the deer to the house but I didn't.

So, that's the story. Flame away.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Anyone that flames for you taking a legal deer needs to do some serious soul searching. We are not all trophy hunters, and shouldn't judge each other based on our own standards. That kind of attitude stinks.

Congrats on your deer. Hope more will follow.

Short,

Nice post. I feel for ya. Gotta pay the dues with the landlord to gete access for this year. I completely understand.

No flames here.

Yeah I'll flame you. I can't believe you shot that deer I wanted to shoot it myself and would have too.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> Congratulation I love to hear about good tracking jobs it sounds like you used common sense in getting that deer good job man. If anybody does flame you they don't have any merit to do so.

Congrats on the buck Shortdraw. Keep that landlord happy.

Sneaking down old logging roads and trails is one of my best ways to hunt.
