coyote encounters
 

Has anyone had any encounters with coyotes on the ground and what has been the behavior of animal(aggressive orstays out of your way)?

I have only one encounter that I could relate with a coyote. This was about 3 or 4 years ago and occurred right at dark. I was walking back to the truck after legal hunting arrows were over when I happened to walk past a thick stand of pines. As I was walking past I heard a low groooowwwlll sound. I turned to look and noticed the coyote silhouetted against the ligtened sky on the other side of the pines. I didn't waste time and continued to walk towards the truck though the coyote never moved from his original spot.

I didn't really interpet that as aggressive but rather that he was just letting me know he was there.

anytime i have ever seen a coyote they got out of the area as fast as they could. i have one on film that i taped for bout 10 minutes and the second he heard my stand creek he didnt even wait around to see what it was he just took off on a dead run

I have had lots of encounters with coyotes. If they wind me or clearly know that I am a human they are gone in an instant. If they are unsure they will sometimes sit and watch just ike a deer would. my site: www.pbase.com/mlo3135127

Over the last 5 or 10 years my father and I have called hundreds of coyotes, and unless there is something wrong with the animal (rabies, ect) as long as it knows you are a human it will get the he!! out of Dodge...99.9% of the time. Coyotes are curious animals, but they are not dumb. Man is their primary killer, and they know it. Sometimes they do not recognize you in camo, but as soon as they figure it out they will be gone. Don't worry about it.

I've hunted yotes a lot and the closest encounter for myself was one came to within 5 ft of my cousin from the back side, and growled at him, when he turned around it took off like a streak of greased lightning. I've called them in while deer hunting but have yet to shoot one with the bow.

Over the years hunting and dealing with my cows Ive had numerous encouters with coyotes. Only once have I ever felt threatened which happened when early one morning whenI came face to face with a pack of 5 or more. At first they broke to run then stopped and began to look at me in a way I wasnt comfortable with. Luckily I had my 7mm instead of my bow. One warning shot and they were on their way and I was on mine back to the camp for a clean pair of underwear.

I had one run a couple feet in front of me, don't know if he knew I was there until I moved. My brother had one barking at him in his treestand. He said it lasted about 15 minutes before the coyote left. He never had a clear shot at it.

The barking is the coyote ratting your buddy out to all his friends. They are real good at that. In our neck of the woods (no woods really) they do this from about 300 + yds, showing that they also realize how far the average shooter can hit something with a good rifle.

I've seen yotes on my lease several times and they have always headed the other way in a hurry. I'm thinking about trying to take one with my bow after the deer season. That should be quite a task.

last day of season i was getting my stands out of the woods and I ran into one while I was on my 4 wheeler.it didnt know what to think.He paced one way then the next just looking at me.I was sitting there.He did this for about 3 or 4 minutes.Then I stood and he was out of there.
Another time I was sitting in the stand and something spooked the does away from me.It was 2 yotes.They were still around when I got down to walk out.They saw me and started walking towards me until the realized I was a human then they were off in a different direction.
In every caese I have known them to run away.No aggresiveness whats so ever.

Shot this one a few years ago. My stand was only about 10 ft up. I saw him at about 75yds and he kept coming closer and closer. Finally he stopped almost directly under me. I shot straight down on him and spined him. He drug him self about30 yds before I could get the second arrow in him. You can see the entrance wound on the second shot. He still lived about 15min with a double lung hit. Tenacious

If everyone keeps shooting at them at every opportunity, they will always show respect to the extreme for humans. The wishy-washy folks who like to "let them be" will only embolden these critters over time. "Shoot at all 'yotes all the time"....My motto. Even if the shot is low percentage. It keeps 'em running.

I agee, kill them game eating K 9's. You said the yote lived for 15 minutes after a double lung shot. That was 14 min. to long. There great practice targets from your stand. Kill em but don't grill em.

I have taken several with a bow. They will run every time unless rabbid. What you have to watch out far is a coy dog half coyote half domestic dog they have no fear of humans or human scent also coyotes that live around the wooded areas in town are less affraid of humans and our scent and usualy associate humans with food and may get too close but this should pose no problem except to small children. Who they may see as a food source.

We shoot them here for sport basically when all other seasons are closed...great long range target practice as well as HIGH SPEED practice..lol I've only ever been able to take one with my bow though, and it was a young one at that. I had a real nice dark golden one coming in one day until he actually winded me. It was only 15 minutes later I had two doe with twins dircectly under me, and it convinced me then that the yotes could actually wind me easier than deer.
I only ever encounted one that I could have considered aggressive. It was one like the earlier mentioned "CoyDog"....it was larger than a yote but definately NOT a wolf as I've been close up to wolves as well. This particular animal though seen me about the same time I saw him. In every encounter prior to this, either I wouldn't have seen it, or it would have bolted when I did. This one on the other hand, lowered his head and looked at me out the top of his eyeslike a few mean dogs I had encountered in my life. At this point, I raised my 870 as I was rabbit hunting and let drive at his face with a No.5 heavy field load. He yelped and wheeled to dart, and I let him have it again twice, but at a little over 40 yards didn't put him down. I waited for a little over 45 minutes to go see if I actually hit the animal and found blood immediately. I followed the blood for about 100 yards before it strayed from a straight line and began circle around. It wasn't too long before I was back on my OWN tracks and the blood was in my boot prints. I got a little spooked for a second but gave chase anyway, and then the trail went into a huge valley that was posted and that's where it ended. All the way back out of the woods that day I was looking over my shoulder, but I really wanted to get him after he circled on me.
I think livbucks is right about shooting at them every chance ya get, or they'll be in your yard tearing up your dogs, cats, and for the farmers, new calves. Save a fawn, smoke a yote!

Typically Coyotes want no part of a human encounter,they are getting out of an area as quickly as possible.If they do not show fear and/or are aggressive it is time to take them out of the gene pool!

Yotes, wolves, bobcats, black bears are all not as scary as people think. I have been in the middle of a wolf pack and as soon as they knew I was there they were gone. Yotes are no different, they would just as soon stay out of site and away from humans.

The only animal that makes me uneasy are lions, them things are crazy. I have never seen one (they dont live by me), but I hope I have a hand gernade when I do.

I had a hell of a scare once.

I was rifle hunting (I apologize, I've repented) and had shot a deer. He took off running across an open field, through a small tree line and then through another field and back into the main patch of woods. As he ran through the last field he ran underneath a loan tree out in the middle of the field. I figured that I'd go sit under that tree since that would be just as easy a place as any for me to start tracking. So I went over there and sat down to wait and track him after giving him a bit. I sit down, place my rifle to my right propped up on the same log I was resting my back on.
After having sat there for about 20 mins. or so I glance up and there are two yotes trotting out of the woods (about 50 yards north of where the deer went into the woods). Where they ran out of the woods put them downwind from ME. So they trot out and make it about 10-20 yards outside the wood line and then freeze, stairing straight at ME. All of the sudden I realize that they are downwind of me, and I'm sitting next to a small pool of blood. The other thing to remember was that the owner of the cattle ranch I was hunting had told me that the yotes had gotten real agressive and were trying to take down calves in broad daylight. So no sooner do I realize that they could be "tracking" me by the smell of the blood, they take off running straight towards me! I pulled up my rifle (still loaded, thank the Lord) and shot one of them in the hip. They both got spooked by the shot and took off. Before I found the one I shot I heard that freaky coyote "battle cry" thing that they do... I thought they might be onto my down deer and took off into the woods to protect what was mine!

That's my story... I've been leary of "overly agressive" coyotes ever since...
