Your right he is a good speaker and politician, thats about all.He has a few good ideas I could support, but most of his talk he will never be able to back up. And I wish he would leave the elite hunting club he hunts deer at and join the rank and file busting are butts to find a deer.I dont have have much respect for someone who doesnt practice what he wants us to practice.A leader is suppose to do exactly that lead and we are suppose to follow, try following him to his hunting spot and see how far you get before your arrested.Im a show up or shut up person, so show us Mr Alt and put your smooth politcal schmooze to the side.I want to see smaller management units like you said,a better deer count and stop blowing are money on timber and insurance concerns and put the public land in to a agriculture program so we can continue to have a LARGE healthy herd.Fooey on the trophy bucks, unless you all want to spend 3 grand to shoot one, like all the other big buck states the outfitters took over. You better wake up and take note of the amount of pay to hunt places there are already in Pa. Living and hunting in some of the midwestern big buck states I can guarantee you the outfitters are licking there chops just waiting to move in if big bucks start popping up everywhere in Pa. You think its hard to find a place to hunt know,Just wait, you better start talking to other hunters from Ill.,Iowa,Kansas, Texas and see what happened to there state. You all need to get out of your caccoon and look around.

Hmmm, I guess Cardeer feels strongly about this issue...<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

I am neither an &quot;Altaholic&quot; nor am I totally against what the man is trying to do.

I like the idea of antler restrictions for next year but I strongly disagree with some of his other suggestions.

Whackmaster....if you really wanted to get a whole lot of opinions on this thread then you should have posted it over on the Northeast forum......hmmm, but then again, maybe that is why you posted it here...<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I was there last night too whackmaster. I was never in favor of most of the things he is proposing but I do feel a lot better towards them now. I think his ideas are genuinely sincere and might work if given the chance. Some ideas I think still are just too difficult to manage with the numbers/mentality of people in this state. Anyone who stays with the job that he is doing despite all the flack he catches must really be dedicate, or glutton for punishment.

RE: Pa. whitetail management

I have to agree with cardeer, Alt is a good speaker and politician. I've lived in NE PA all my life and have been hunting here for more than 40 years. To me the PA Game Commission is just another political organization to muster up votes for politicians.

Proof! Just look at the recent firing of commissioner Vheneski buy Gov. Ridge because he stooded up for the hunters in my area and fought against a political move to ban a target range on game lands. He was fired and the politicians won.

Here is another example that I just read this morning. Taken from the PA GC NEWS (2-10-02):
DR. ALT ANNOUNCES PUBLIC MEETINGS TO DISCUSS DEER MANAGEMENT : .....Kingston, Luzerne County: Thursday, Jan. 17, 7 p.m., Wyoming Valley West Middle School, Chester Street. The event is being hosted by Rep. Phyllis Mundy, and co-hosted by Reps. Kevin Blaum, Todd Eachus, Tom Tigue and John Yudichak.... Look who is hosting it!!!!!!! See any Sportsmen listed???? And by the way, the head of the PAGC hates bow hunters. Just ask the PA UNITED BOWHUNTERS organization.

Yes, we do need better management of the deer herd but by whom - POLITICANS? I think not.

RE: Pa. whitetail management

Dr. Gary Alt is a greedy man. For those who don't believe it, just listen to this. He wants to give the first week of archery season to rifle hunters for free. Archery hunters pay for that time and he is giving it to rifle hunters because he doesn't archery hunt. He wants our state to become a BIG buck state because of money. He realizes that Pennsylvania could GROW TONS OF HUGE BUCKS, and what does that mean? People will be rushing in from EVERYWHERE to get a liscence. In other words, MORE MONEY! You people can't wait to see how good Alts plans are, WELL I Really dont want to see how bad the hunting in this state becomes. Why are people so stuck on antler size. Sure, I like shooting large racked bucks but it doesn't matter to me if it is big or small. I still get the same rush. I guess it is just a way for someone to express their man hood because they are lacking the expression in other places if you know what I mean.

Good Luck This Season: Buck Magnet
P.S. Only Chuck Adams can sit at home and see deer so get into the woods. =;^)

The general firearms doe only hunt that was being proposed for the first week of Oct. has been taken off the table. I personally would like to shoot a nice racked deer, not simply for antler size but for the wisdom that allowed the deer to hide from hunters long enough to get that size.

Nothing will be set in stone until the April meeting when they vote, then any changes are for this year. Next year will bring all new proposals! Enjoy, Ami

several of you hit on the key issue in Gary Alts plan. That bigger bucks are a by product of a healthy herd with a 1/1 buck doe ratio. the basic principle he is utilizing are proven elsewhere. The tough part of his job is applying those proven principles in a state with a much different &quot;herd&quot; of hunters than most. That is why he has come up with some unprecedented ideas. They may not all work, and he has said so, but they are based on science and that's exactly what we need. He won't make things better here overnight but things will be better eventually. The &quot;good old days&quot; of Pa deer hunting are just ahead of us!

i think cardeer has hit it on the head ,but i also think that when the 40 to50 year old crowed starts to stop hunting, thats when the(pgc)is going to change.the counties will become managment zones.i hunt in pike county and the pgc has been clear cutting there.before they stared clear cutting you had access to alot of areas ,now after the clear cutting pga has gated every thing and are making you walk in to areas.i dont mind waiking but have you ever had to drag a deer out of the woods (1 to 2 miles).and thats no lie.it not a fun thing.

RE: Pa. whitetail management

We went with a trophy program in Ky and now we have more healthy deer of all sizes than ever before. We don't have antler restrictions IMO (that is not fare to all) we take more does and are only allowed 1 buck per year,a polished antler is all that is needed to be a buck.Kill a doe with a 10 point rack and in full velvet it is a doe tag.A button buck that is polished is a buck.We are up to as many does a year as I want to buy tags for in the zone that I hunt.In the other zones it is only 1 buck and 1 doe or 2 doe .You then can buy 2 extra archery doe tags.

The concern of out of state hunters is genuine and it is a small problem in Ky,our trophy bucks taken are 2nd only to Illinois per acre and most don't even realize it.The managers definately need to be cocerned about the locals more than the out of state money. The only money our wildlife management get is from the sale of tags ,licenses and donations. Our managers are doing a great job and other states can learn from them.

I know this has nothing to do with your state but wanted to give an idea what proper deer management can do for the Pa. hunter on the local level.I don't know if you have local bowhunting organizations but ours is very helpfull to the managers in setting up restrictions.

I with you Frank. Last year the rhetoric was horrible after they met to set up the proposals for voting in April. This topic is about to get even hotter in the days to come.

It seems to me that when some people who ACTUALLY go to see the man speak comes out supporting him or at least giveing him more of a chance than before. I bet most people who go against him probable didn't ever go see him speak in person. Not saying everyone but I wouldn't be suprised if atleast 60 to 70% never saw him and just say they did.

Whackmaster glad to see you got to see him and came out with a better understanding of the REAL situation.

I too was at the meeting. I find some of his idea's very sound. I can see it where I hunt. I feel the extra doe week in mid October will really mess up archery season, but I will be out there. I Pa we have become creatures of habbit with our hunting. Going to Grandpa's camp... same tree stand. Lets give it a chance.

I will be going to see him...again...at the Allentown Sports Show during the first week in March.

I hope I have the opportunity to ask him some questions this time...<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
