Bowhunting on public land with or with out a tree stand?
Witch one has the most advantage. Hunting from a stand or on foot. I have always hunted on the ground with a rifle, but not sure about Bowhunting. Have you ever left your tree stand up in public land.

If you leave your stand on public ground it will be stolen.

I'd go in with a climber and find a well used trail or a food/water source to setup on. And I wouldn't recommend leaving the stand in the woods unless you're hunting till dark and expecting to return before daylight the next morning.

If you knwe not many would be using the land or if others leave there's and it isnt stolen then I would consider leaving mine there. But most diffinately put a locking cable on it.Harder to cut the cable then it is to cut a chain. If you are unsure about it being stolen then I would use a climber.

I hunt public land a lot and would never even consider for one second leaving my Summit in the woods.........it would be gone in a heartbeat.
Use your stand for sure.........just take it with you when you leave ;) |
RE: Bowhunting on public land with or with out a tree stand?
it is against the law in Wi to leave a stand or any other item on public land. The DNR will compinsate any stands and sell them at auctions. what you come in with, you leave with.

RE: Bowhunting on public land with or with out a tree stand?
I've got three up on public land right now, but they are locked up, if someone wants to steal them they'll haveto bring a bolt cutter into the woods with them, and if they want to do that to steal my $35 stands then more power to them.

On public land, I would use a climber. The deer are pretty smart due to hunting pressure and you have to be very careful when hunting from the ground. A ground blind is a must. I use a Summit climber when I hunt public land. I left it one time when I hunted till dark on a Friday, locked it up with two cable locks and then got back in Saturday morning. Otherwise I would not leave it in the woods.

I almost always use a treestand while archery hunting. Also be careful as to what kind of treestand you use on gamelands, i'm pretty sure it's illegal to use any kind of treestand that harms the tree you climb. I've heard that even summit stands are illegal because of the teeth, this might not be true but i would check first. Good luck.

In order to steal it they have to find it. I sometimes leave my stand locked on athe tree at night if I know I will be back the next morning. Sometimes I will find a nice spot and lock -it, and cover it. if I will be hunting the same area. But 99%of the time I take it with me. The other morning I went to get my stand and it took a while to find as it was concealed so well. I was 5' from it and still couldn't spot it. Next time I'll hang a sign with an arrow pointing the way.;)

RE: Bowhunting on public land with or with out a tree stand?
I do a lot of hunting on what you may call public hunting but up here in the land of the free if it's not posted then you can hunt it. But no matter where you live there is bound to be a theif so what I do is leave my stand up in the tree locked with a cable and lock and then I take my ladder down. It only takes a second to put up the ladder and not many people are going to go through all the trouble of bringing in a ladder steps and bolt cutter to get your stand. And I would always suggest using a tree stand when ever you can bow or gun hunting you can see so much better it helps hide a little movement and it puts your sent up above the ground. But hay thats just me Mike

RE: Bowhunting on public land with or with out a tree stand?
With a good climber you can have mobility to move from spot to spot..You can also stalk if your equipment is not too noisy....Practice setting up and taking down repeatedly ,..before the season starts....this is always overlookedwhen we prep for the season. Your standis an asset not a Liability. If you cant be mobile with it....leave it at home or on private parcels
Remember ..leaving your stand may help the footsoldier become airborne as others have stated |
RE: Bowhunting on public land with or with out a tree stand?
I hunt public land some here in Texas believe me your crap will be stolen so gey a climber that packs in and out easy or a good pop up blind .

RE: Bowhunting on public land with or with out a tree stand?
If I hunt public land, I usually walk-in and walk-out a climbing stand. It limits possible climbing sights, but perhaps not as much as a stolen stand would limit the pocketbook.
