The longer I hunt the more I understand there are no certainties. I always expect the unexpected. That is definitely strange, but at least you got him. Maybe if he ran he would have expired quicker...who knows. ??? Weird!
A couple years ago I personally witnessed my buddy shooting a doe with a muzzleloader, and we trailed it for over 400yds, jumping it a couple times along the way (the last of which was at least 15-20mins after he shot it), and when we finally found her, I couldn't believe my eyes. He shot her right through the heart...I stuck my pinky finger in the hole in the heart. I would never have believed it in a million years that the deer was alive that long, and went that far...if I hadn't been there. Animals are just flat out tough sometimes.
