What do you hear when you shoot???

When you shoot your bow do you hear any noises? Any twang?........any boing?? Anything?

I shoot a Patriot and have NEVER been able to eliminate a tiny twang I hear at the shot.........I have tried everything from stripping the bow bare to epoxy in the cable rod to every string product on the market........still get a tiny twang.

Here is the thing I am wondering though..........I had my brother shoot my bow today while I stood at various distances an angles from him........I heard nothing.......dead silence......just the zip of the arrow. Obviously having my face buried in the string when it goes off is causing me to hear the tiny twang and I shouldn't worry about it because it is not an audible sound outside of a 1 foot circle.

Do you guys hear anything when you let an arrow fly? Does your bow sound louder to you then it really is?

Does your bow sound louder outdoors then indoors?

I have had so many people tell me over the last couple years that they can't belive how quiet my bow is...........I just smile and say "Yea.....I like it" but I am always thinking they must be shooting a grenade launcher because of all the nice things I have to say about my bow...........quietness has never been the first thing I think of.

So you hear nothing when the string lets go?

RE: What do you hear when you shoot???

I hear a slight "twang" as well.

I have had people tell me that they think my bow is quiet as well but I never had anyone shoot it while I stood back and listened. I don't know anyone with my draw length:D

I think because the string is so close to your ear, there is no way youwill eliminate the sound of the string (or loop) leaving the release. I believe that isthe "twang" sound you are hearing.

Try shooting with your fingers once and see if you still hear it.

but I am always thinking they must be shooting a grenade launcher
Too Funny!!:D

RE: What do you hear when you shoot???

Well i do hear a very small twang, But its so quiet i barely notice it. Then again remeber that a had been shooting a old pse that you thought was going to blow up when you shot it.

RE: What do you hear when you shoot???

I have never shot a bow that I thought was truely silent when I shot it... I always heard something, a twang, a buzz sometimes even a snap depending on the bow and I have shot a lot of the bows that some people consider to bethe super quiet ones..One the quieter bows the sound was more quiet but it was still there nevertheless...But, when someone else shoots the same bow they all seem much quieter.. I think it is a proximity thing personally

RE: What do you hear when you shoot???

Just to add. If you shoot with your fingers you will still hear some kind of sound as the string leaves the fingers (or tab) but you will notice that it will be a different sound. Any time you have that much pressure and a string that tight, there will always be a sound as the string is let go.

RE: What do you hear when you shoot???

I hear something that sounds similar to a rubber band snapping, I think it's a combination of the string, and the peep tubing. I had my wife sit just behind me and to my left when I shot. and she says she can't hear anything. So more than likely it'swhat IlRancher said, it's a proximity thing. I'm not to worried about it.

RE: What do you hear when you shoot???

Yeah, i videotaped myself and recorded my shot on a tape recorder to see how it sounded, and it really didn't sound like much at all. Sounds louder when you're shooting compared to standing back a few feet. I thought the PSE Primos STL's theyuse on the Truth series of videos sound loud on the videos, while the Hoyt's and Mathew's on Realtree and Drury sound really quiet.

I don't hear a 'twang' sound that I can notice but I do pick up on a 'thump' from the limbs. I do think it's louder indoors or in a blind but that would make sense since the sound cannot travel as far as it does outdoors. I've recorded myself with a camcorder and the bow definately sounds much quieter when it's not right next to your face. :)

I hear a little twang on my diamond, but it's unnoticeable at 10yds.I recommended a saunders buzz off to a friend, after hearing good things.,and he said it took the twang away!I'm going to buy my own shortly.

I've also been complamented on my Pat's quietness.
But sinceI put the wisker biscuit on the sound has increased for the shooter. I hear a slap now that i thought was the STS until i shot a bare shaft and the slap went away.
I soaked the Biscuit in Armor All last night and drenched my fletchings today and now finally the noise level between bare shaft and fletched arrow is about the same.
I still think it was quiter with the Drop zone though.
I did remove one of my slight twang makers by dousing a non-pivoting bolt with thick string waxon my new Vital bow gear slider.
I slowly took it apart piece by pice until I found a bolt with course threads that had too much slack in it allowing it to buzz between the nut & bolt.

I guess the next move is listening to the bow while someone else shoots it.

I'll say this, it is way quieter than my neighbors recurve- but still not as quiet as it could be= silent:Dj/k.

BTW one of my bosses brought his old bow out to work for me to evaluate. Old bear looking wood riser job. After seeing itI will no longer be so anal about my rigs if that bow used to harvest deer. OMG I can't believe how far we have come! ~ 30% letoff, no wall- pull until you reach your DL, 900" long, both cams rubbing the limbs- whow was it a sight.
I bet it had more than a slight twang!

I always hear the Jimi Hendrix rendition of The Star Spangled Banner when I shoot , but that's just me. People tell me I have issues.

RE: What do you hear when you shoot???

A good test for bow noise is too hold the bow firmly by the handle and gently tap the limb. You can pin-point exactly where the noise is coming from. Don't whack it hard, a gentle tap will reveal any loose parts if there are any.

I shot my hunting bow for the first time out of doors today at a 3D shoot and was actually quite surprised with how quiet it really was. My shooting partner commented on as much even though I had not mentioned anything at the time.

Inside it definitely sounds louder.

a tiny "fwap" kinda sound.. about the equivilent to a whisper in volume. Most of that comes from my drop away hitting the shelf.

That's odd, I always thought I heard Janis singing , Bobby McGee or Try (just a little bit harder).

My recurve and longbow only make a subdued "tunk" on release. With my selfbow, all I hear is the arrow cutting air.:)

I agree with most that it is because you are so close to it. I thought my bow was kinda loud until my friend shot it and I could barely hear it.

My bow has a definate twang but I don't worry about it. By the time the deer hear me shoot it's too late anyway. My shots are rarely over 15 yards and they don't have time to jump the string. I don't use any sound dampening devices on my bow or string..

I hear a slight twang like someone said kinda like a rubberbandfrom my Outback and really never noticed it much until I shot a Switchback and it was dead silent..

True, but I have occasional problems with clearance if I put ANYTHING under the rest. I've learned to just live with it.

My bow is pushed to its physical limits. It slams when it goes off, like an old lady beating a kid with a rolled up newspaper.

WHAP - the sound of happiness.

RE: What do you hear when you shoot???

I would have to say that 99% my patty is almost silent. The only time I notice it making any noise is when my stabilizer rattles loose after a couple hundred shots. I need to go and buy a bottle of lock-tite to clear that problem up.

Come to think of it I had a couple of the spider looking things on my string break off (hush kit) and the bow got a touch louder, I relplaced them with cat whiskers and its back to quiet.

RE: What do you hear when you shoot???

I get a hard plastic"slap" sound when I release and arrow, and I am pretty sure it is because of the bow sling I attached to my bow.

txmarshmonkey 08-29-2005 04:55 PM

RE: What do you hear when you shoot???

I was getting a noise that I finally pin-pointed. My string and buss cable were touching each other, right above the cable-slide, where they cross. I installed a new slide (white teflon) and the noise went away. It took me a while to figure it out, but I used the method that "hunttones" uses. Hold the bow firmly by the handle and then bump the edges of my limbs with the heel of my other hand. It will tell you pretty quick if anything is loose.
