I also think that the more mature bucks make the earliest scrapes and rubs.

Bucks actually use scrapes and work licking branchesall year long...just not as frequently or with the intensity that they do in the fall. It's getting to be that time now where scrapes will start popping up.

I have read that early rubbing and scraping is indictative of mature bucks who are marking territory.
I can attest this to be true, at least in one circumstance.
2 years ago my buddy and I were scouting in mid August and came upon the same scraping you mentioned. After careful monitoring we found this to be a territorial scrape by "THE" mature buck in the area (on public land.) We made a solid plan and each took stand on travel routes to/from the scrape area. We both saw the monster buck opening morning, evening, and then the next few times we hunted we'd see him off and on, but he was always either just out of range, or not enough light to shoot.
He ended up falling to another hunter's arrow in early November. 13 point with a massive drop tine.

I am seeing the same thing down here in Florida. I have scrapes everywhere and rub lines too. It's real early, but things are wacky down here.
