How did you get hooked on bowhunting
#11
I was 10yrs old..........The combination of a 1st place finish in my first ever archery competition at a Cub Scout jamboree (first time I ever picked up a bow) andmy own"Sports Afield" magazinesubscription pretty much sealed the deal for desire.
Took another 3yrs until I got a bow of my own. (NOBODY in my family hunts)
Been all downhill for the last 20+ yrs.

Well,i started out at 10 or 11 with a compound bow. I never had anyone to help me, as my dad doesnt bow hunt, and i lost interest quickly. Then, the summer before i turned 14, i bought some Monster bucks videos and was on here alot and bowhunting sounded and looked awesome. That August, i got a borrowed PSE Nova set up and was shooting good enough to hunt in september. With help of some fine folks here at this site, i taught myself how to shoot completely and everything I needed to know. I missed 3 or 4 deer that fall. I just couldn't estimate range. I was so hooked, i tossed the pse by the wayside and got a tricked out Mathews. Now I'm a bowhunting fanatic, and I'd rather do it than gun hunt. Thanks to those who helped me in the beginning, a few of them are gone, a few are still here, you know who you are.

I had a very good friend that I worked with around 8 years ago, that talked me into shooting his bow one day after work, this gentlemen was kind enough to take time after work each day after that to let me use his bow for practice till mine came in, since I was HOOKED... He also took me on my first bowhunt, whick was just south of Texarkana, Tx by Wright patman lake.. I didnt get one, but I learned alot from that friend over the years. To repay him for his kindness I was able to take him some years later to my South Texas deer lease and give him a chance to harvest his first buck, as things went nothing was getting close to the set-up I had prepared for him, so he picked up his rifle, with the sun just coming up , out in the wheat field stood a nice looking buck and I gave him the go ahead. John had took his first buck deer ever it was a Nice 8pt with a 22 inch inside spread, I still cherish the look on his face as if his dreams had come true......
Shortly after that , my friend John moved to Northern Arkansas and was having a rough time with life and family and we simply lost touch, Man not a day go's by when I have bow in hand that I'm not very thankful for him taking the time to get me started flinging arrows.
Thanks Big John,..,

Around the age of 16 my buddy and I were looking at the Arkansas state regs book and noticed that our bow season ran from Oct 1 thru Feb 28th. At the time we only gun hunted and had just a meesly 3 weeks to hunt.
So the choice was obvious.....and extra 4 months to hunt PLUS you could shoot does

I used to watch my dad come home from every hunt and saw the excitement and emotion in his eyes when he would get one. When I was old enough and big enough to pull a hunting bow back, I had a big buck walk right under my tree during my first season....and the rest is history.

How did I get hooked? Easy. I went.
That's all it took.

For me, it all started back in the early 80's. We moved to PA in 1980 and my grandfather was living with us. He introduced me to archery with a youth longbow that he had purchased for my dad when he was younger. As I became better with that I eventually upgraded to his recurve. For a few years I was able to shoot that bow until I started to out grow it. That year my parents purchased me my first compound bow. Bear archery Black Bear.
The following season was my first hunting with a bow and despite not harvesting any game that season I knew I was hooked.

I got hooked about 20 years ago. I just loved the challenge. Though I sadly wounded 4-5 bucks those first 10 years, I did not finally kill my first deer with a bow until about 10 years ago. Two years ago, I purchase my first new bow since 1986 or so.
With that new bow, I have already killed 4-5 deer. I have so much more confidence in this new bow.
But for me, I have been in love with bowhunting since I was a teen.

To be honest I was kinda against bowhunting. I didn't judge anyone for bowhunting but it wasn't something I wanted to do. My husband is a bowhunter and he used to be able to start his season way before me which got me really jealous. I would become very itchy with a b when he'd be out and i'd be home. One day Huntnma (my twin sister) came up to my house with a bow which was given to her. I pulled back and knew INSTANTLY that I wanted to get one and start bowhunting. A month or so later on Valentine's Day my husband took me to Bass Pro and bought me a bow. It opened an entire new world for me and now I love it.
