RE: Question about scent control with ATV's

I got an idea...

I will sell my ATV and my truck (because I get within 3/4 of a mile to my stand with that) and walk that 9 miles to my hunting area. Yeah, that must be what some of you are doing.

Now that I have that out of my system. Opinions are like buttholes....everybody has one. Mine isn't necisarily the right one and either is any of yours.

wvarcher, since I failed to do the right thing earlier. WELCOME to the boards. Don't take this as a personal attack or that we don't want you here. Because that is not the case. We are glad to have you here to give your opinion.

I don't doubt your woodsmanship and markmanship at all. But I have a friend that uses his ATV to get to and from his hunting area all the time and I would put his woodsmanship and markmanship up against yours in a heartbeat. Not saying he is better, but he is a very passionate hunter. He is my age, all of 26 and he will point out stuff in the woods that I wouldn't have taken a second look at if I were by myself. We started hunting at the same age (14)and he has taken far more quality animals than I have.

Don't get me wrong, when I take my ATV I don't even get close to the woods. It is parked in the middle of the field in a low spot about 200 yards away....which is usually around 600 yards from the truck. When the crops are in, I just bite the bullet and head out on foot. But later in the season after time change, time is of the essence (sp??) and I usually don't get that much. SO I have to make the best of what little I have.

Again, I am not condoning your tactics or Mikes or anybodies.

RE: Question about scent control with ATV's

My name is Glen and I'm an ATV owner. Just too much land in AZ to get to hunt area without truck or ATV. I park way off from the actual hunt spot and hike in. BUT-Have shed human blood from jerks riding around just before dusk right by a waterhole. They would never get on a board like this because they are not hunters and are dumber than dirt so not trying to offend anyone. Also this type seems to get real nasty when you walk out of a blind and tell them they are stupid little weenies and thus a little fight can occur. I bet not one person on this thread would ever ride an atv in to ruin another guys hunt so to me this discussion is not a serious disagreement. Good hunting and stay away from my spot!

RE: Question about scent control with ATV's

Hi Mike, I just had to throw my 2 cents in. I'm going to steer clear of the "to atv or not to atv" nonsence. It seems your topic was scent control while riding. I too, use an atv to get to and from my stand as well as hauling deer back to camp, filling up feeders and all sorts of camp chores. Your coment about exhaust was right on target. I don't think there is a surefire method. I guess the scentlock theory makes some sense but I can't afford it. One thing I can suggest is that you make an effort to avoid standing around you're 4 wheeler while it's warming up. (I'm quite sure you already do) I think this is where most scent is picked up. While actualy traveling on your bike most should pass behind you.....I didn't realize 4 wheelers were so contraversial around here...Good Luck Mike..Fletch

RE: Question about scent control with ATV's

Man I gotta get my 2 cents in on this deal also. "ANY SLOB CAN RIDE INTO THE WOODS SHOOT A DEER........" Wow so now if I use my ATV to hunt I'm a SLOB!!!!!! Welcome to the board wvarcher. Please keep in mind "Hunter" covers a WIDE variety of people here. What works for you may not someone else. So keep an open mind!!!!
I like to use different means to hunt. Sometimes I feel like taking that long walk to my stands, and still hunt along the way, do some scouting around. Other days I may be limited on time, and got a good idea the deer will be near my stand that day, so I load up the ATV and go. I only go where no other hunters won't or shouldn't be without committing a crime on my land, so I'm not disturbing them. I don't appreciate riders who tear up the woods, trails, gates, and make a mess it gives all of us a bad Rep. So its natural to bash ALL ATV riders. But hey I guess that makes us all poachers too, because my neighbor down the road does!!
Anyways I've too rode past deer on my ATV, they just look up at me. I've also ridden upon a bedded doe. It seem some areas are not bothered my them. So they also have an advantage. Just like the local farmer in the field on his tractor. I often wondered on the scent control thing also, not only my hunting clothes when riding, but what about my stand (cloth seat), and my weapon? Other than putting on our clothes after we arrive near our stands. What about placing our equipment in plastic bags!!!

RE: Question about scent control with ATV's

wvarcher, It might be a climate thing. When my morning hunt ends tomorrow morning it will be reaching close to 90 degrees here in Texas. At 90 degrees I consider a one mile walk to be no fun at all.
Good luck to you this season and I assure you I am no hunting slob. But if I am lucky enough to shoot a deer in the morning and ride back to camp with a big smile on my face and a deer strapped to my atv rack...well call me what you want if it makes you feel like more of a true MOUNTAIN MAN!!

RE: Question about scent control with ATV's

I drive my ATV within a mile of my hunting spot a few hours before i sit in my stand to let deer relax i may have spooked. Without an ATV and a Warn winch some deer are impossible to get, especially when you are hunting in the badlands here in North Dakota.

Why work when you can hunt???? Heck why work at all!!
