Due to a bad sholder from years of football (and not to mention age) I am considering the purchase of a crossbow. I want to get the most for the money and one that is not real complicated. I know there are a ton of makers out there now but I would like to hear from some actual crossbow owners ..please tell me what kind you have and what you think of it performance wise and an idea of what it sells for... also I know they are loud so how much does the noise it makes affect the shot...thanks guys

Horton Crossbow's are by far the best value for your money in my opinion. Sure there are a lot of crossbow's on the market but you can't beat a Horton for reliability and performance. I have a Legend SL I bought in 1999 or 2000 new and it still shoots and performs as good today as the day I nought it. This is the second Horton I have owned and the other is still being used by the guy I sold itto when I got this one and it is well over 12 years old. Customer support is great. The Legend I own now had a small crack in one of the limbs last season and was out of warranty bybetter than a year and an engineer fromHorton returned my call and wanted the head sent in so he could check it out. I had it set up with2 sets of limb savers to keep noise down and he wanted it just like it was set up because they have never had a crackor failurefor normal use. Horton sent me a brand new headwith 2 new sets of limb savers no questions askwith a note thanking me for returning theone I sent back so the could see where it failed and correct the design if there was a problem. This must have been pretty rare occasion for then the way the guy talked to me on the phone and all he wanted was that head back to see what went wrong. Anyway like I said, Horton without a doubt. I have a friend who is in your situation , he has an Excaliber . He says he went with Excaliber because he liked the simplicity of a recurve crossbow that delivers the power of a compound model without the quirks . He used to be a competition archer , compound , recurve and longbow.You should go to a shop that carries a selection of brands and shoot a few before deciding what you want . I definitely reccomend a rope cocking device and a stringer .

Generally speaking, both the Tenpoint and Excalibur lines are held in the highest regard. Probably next on the list would be Horton. I bought an inexpensive Barnett model but I primarily use it only during our late muzzleloader season.
