Would youShoot

I hope this guy will make it through this season. I doubt most people would let him go. So the question is would you shoot him on opening day? Or if it was the last day could you let him go?

I am not as picky or as seasoned as some of these gents. That guy is gonna be a bit bigger by hunting time and come archery season I would shoot him the first day or the last.

Yep, he'd be meat on the table. That would be a pretty nice Alabama buck.

I personally wouldn't , but I couldn't blame anyone who did.

Nope. Only if it was the end of the season and I would need a good reason to like for the contest.

He's a shooter in my book.

Id stick him.

RE: Would youShoot

Hm, Well, let's see here. He doesn't have 5 points on one side, not a 21" inside spread, and won't go in the 150's. Nope, no way. Just pokin fun at BOWFANATIC......opening day? Well, I don't know. I would like to say that on opening day I wouldn't, especially since opening day here can be in the 90's, but realistically, yeah....he's gonna get a chance to hold a Stinger tipped Beman.

RE: Would youShoot

Opening day? No I would not. Last day of the season? No I would not. By then I will have his papa. ;)

On private land he would walk. He will be a hog in two years. You have to have patience and discipline if you want to allow yourself the best chance at seeing a P&Y deer. You let him pass and the big buck behind him will make his way following him.
At least you hope. Although if you want to take him, nothing wrong with that.

It,s an individuals call. Me no, but we really have some monsters in Kansas If this is a trophy in your area bag him.

I'm pretty sure that I would take him.

I would shoot him..........and any other deer I have a tag in my pocket for.

RE: Would youShoot

nope, I'd enjoy watching him and let him mature, shoot a doe or elk for meat...

RE: Would youShoot

I would do it. I don't trophy hunt but I do limit myself to a degree and he more than fits. If that walked by my stand during bow season I would do it without thinking. That is one of the nicer deer I have seen in my area.

He would be a gonner during gun season as well, I am limited to at least 4 points on one side on the property I hunt on.

In the area I live in letting him walk so I could get him next year probably wouldn't work. Way to many people hunting that will shoot anything that moves and the properties are not large enough to expect the deer to remain resident. Or he would get taken out with vehicle instead.

I haven't been doing this long enough to let something like that walk. Like I always say, the state sold me the tags to kill deer not go nature watching.

I'd let him pass. That young buck will put alot of horn on by next year. If its private land I'd most certainly let him walk. But a trophy is different in everyone's book. If he's a trophy to you and he will make you proud take him. Good luck this fall.

Most of you guys must not hunt in central WV...LOL I would shoot him there on the first day. We've killed some nice bucks on our farm there, but this would be considered a mature buck there.

In Ohio, where I live, I would let him go...at least early in the season.

.

Im with bow, I would not shoot this deer. His body is very small he cant be that old. I think that if you give him 1 more year you will be very suprised.

I would pass and shoot a doe for meat. He will be a good one in a couple of years and it's a long season!

I honestly don't know. He is very borderline for me. He looks thicker cause he's in velvet, but its early, so he does have a little growing to do. I want to say I'd pass, but a lot is going to do with what other kind of bucks are in the area.

i will have to agree with Silent...

this Buck is a youngin, he will be a NICE surprise in a year or two with the proper managment and the "Proper Nutrition"

get some mineral mixtures and put it out early next year but watch him walk by you this year... Trust us you will be much happier next year when you see him again.

In the areas I hunt I would shoot that deer in NH, VT or Maine in a heartbeat.

I would not shoot that deer in CT orIowa on any day of the season.

I can honestly say that where I hunt, itwould be easier to harvest a Pope & Young deer in Iowa than a doe in NH, so passing a young but mature deer like that really wouldn't be a thought.

For those who can pass in hopes of realisitcally seeing that deer next year.....I hope you understand how lucky you are.

I don't think anyone can realistically expect to see the same deer next year. Deer move and patterns change and you have no way of knowing if he will even be in the same zip code next year. BUT I would pass on him because I absolutely positively guarantee you that he won't get any bigger if you kill him right now. Some one else may shoot him the next day, you never know. But you know for sure that if you kill him he won't ever get any bigger so you let him go and HOPE you get another chance when he is bigger. If not you hope someone else does and maybe you get a crack at one that someone else passed up last year.

I've let many deer that size walk over the years...... However, things are a changin'!! I'd definitely take a shot with my stickbow

Since that would be the biggest deer I've seen on public land around here in the past 10 years... The answer is obvious. Opening day, closing day or any day in between, I'd shoot.

RE: Would youShoot

I would pass on unless he goes into a massive growth spurt. He is a nice buck but the lack of tine length and cut that mass in half from the velvet is not going to put him quite up there. Besides here in Iowa he still has a father and Grandfather alive somewhere!!!

That being said if anyone else shot him I would be happy to help drag him out and listen to the story.

For me? Opening dayno I would not shoot that buck because I know there is bigger bucks in my area. But the last day of the seasonI just don`t know? I can`t say I would not I guess it all depends on how my season went? Do I need meat? How bad do I want to take a deer? In my area Thats not a bad buck at all .So I guess I would have to wait untill that day to see?

He'd be tough to pass but I've let animal of the same calibre pass. The fact the season is coming to an end is a moot point IMO. He's either a shooter or not, that is how I look at it.

I would have to take him, while I know there are bigger bucks in my area that deer would still be a shooter.

I'd end up shooting him the first day or the last as long as he was close and I could get a good shot off.

lol.....yea that's how I look at it too in the early season but sometimes after a long hard season of hunting your standards start to change a little. It should stay the same but I can't say 100% that I wouldn't shoot that deer if it was the last day and I hadn't had a very good season. Because if I had gotten into that frustrated "OK now it's personal" kind of mind set on that particular day then that little guy might be in trouble:D

Approximately 80% to 85% of the bucks in my home area are taken at 11/2 years of age.My personal standards at home over the last several years have been a buck at least 21/2 years old and eight points or better.I believe that it is likely that the buck in the photograph is or will be a 21/2 year old this hunting season,he will be an eight pointer,so from that perspective he would meet my criteria.Having said that I would do my best to resist shooting him if I had the opportunity, especially if he appeared spindly.
The challenge that I have encountered in my home area is that there are years that I have hunted mybutt off and never seen a 21/2 year old buck. The % of bucks in our area that make it to the age of 31/2 is a joke.If I had an opportunity on this buck on the last day of all our seasons, bow, rifle, muzzleloader, late bow.I would pass because my goodness he made it.Now if he doesn't get hit by a car or run down by coyote's I may see him at 31/2!
