I prefer Knight and Hale, Primos, Wild Outdoors and North American Whitetail(I like Greg Miller better than Stan or Pat).

Too much commercialism, although the sponsors pay the bills. I don't care much for Dream Season.....I detest the format and idea of the contest.

The thing I don't like about most of the hunting shows on TV is that they get some celebrity and go to a ranch with a guide. The guide sets them up in a blind or tree stand and then a bunch of deer walk by and they shoot the biggest buck. Yes, you have to be a good shot, you have to not spook the game but where is all the hard work that most of us put into hunting? I realize that these shows have time slots and it would take hours to show a successful hunt from start to finish but it just gets old seeing the same cookie cutter footage all the time. I like seeing the animals in their natural habitat but thats about it. The sponsor's advertisment eats up 10 minutes of the show and commercials another 10 so you really only get about 10 minutes of actual hunting footage. Someone has a sig that says "If it was easy, they would call it shopping." Well, that's what most of these shows come off as. Buy $5,000 worth of gear and spend 30 minutes in a tree and you will get a monster buck!

Just my 2 cents.

I find myself both agreeing and disagreeing with a lot of the points that are being brought up. Here's my take on things:

First of all - they're TV shows. Look at any other shows in any other market, and you're going to see the type of stuff. The sponsors are the ones who make the show possible, so of course you're going to see people using and endorsing their products on their shows. This isn't anything new, so why are you getting all worked up about it?A lot of hunting shows even have theirlead sponsor's name IN THE TITLE OF THE SHOW. I just don't understand why it's so shockingly terrible when all of a sudden the people on the show are saying how they used brand X to harvest their animal and they recommend it's use to other hunters.

In regards to Dream Season in particular - I think it's a great show myself. Agree or disagree with whether or not scent blocking/eliminating clothing works, it doesn't matter. The basis of the show is to have a team competition in all aspects of what the producers and judges consider to be vital areas of not only hunting, but filming as well. With a company like Scent Blocker on board of course they're going to stress the importance of using their products properly. These guys all knew what they signed up for when they sent in their audition tapes, and should be prepared to be judged accordingly.

As for the amateurs vs. professionals thing - give me a break. What makes these "professional" hunters any better suited than the other guys on the show? Talk to any person in the hunting industry who hunts for a living and they will all say the same thing - "I'm just a regular person like you who loves to hunt, and I am fortunate enough to be able to earn a living doing it." The thing with Dream Season is that the "pros" don't hunt for a living. The only difference between them and the rest of the guys is that they have previous experience with filming and producing hunts they way that Drury Productions wants it done. The whole "pros" versus "ams" is a little played up for TV, but it is a good marketing tool that gets people fired up and holds their attention. Can you blame any good marketing agency for doing their job?

This is where the double edged sword really gets me- as much as I enjoy watching the TV shows and the DVD's, it absolutely kills me to see some of the things people do to shoot a big deer on camera. Some of the shot placement I've seen in recent years has been nothing but horrendous, and then they turn to the camera and say "All right! Got him! He's down right there!" Granted there have been a few times when people say "You know what, I got a bad hit on that animal so I'm gonna back out and let it lay and come back tomorrow". But it's those bad shots - the quartering-in shots, the neck shots, the running/moving shots that really just get to me. These aren't "mistakes"- these are shots that peoplemethodically take on purpose, IMO just to have some footage totake up time on a TV show or video.

In truth, I think the video/tv industry is right on that edge between effectively promoting our sport and giving people something to get them fired up about hunting, and hurting us as a whole with the quest for more, bigger bucks year after year. Look at the pressure many of us put on ourselves to shoot trophy deer every year - then imagine if you were a hunting "celebrity" and had to try and please not only the people who watch and buy your videos, but your sponsors who pay your bills as well. It's tough.

Well said justin.

The drury bros, say it themselves that they are trying a format to be different and set themselves apart from the mainstream hunting show. Some are going to like it, some hate it. You can't blame them for trying something a little different. If they see thier ratings drop, they'll do what it takes to make people watch again.

I don't like Dream Season. I don't like the idea of hunting is a compitition between men. The first season was 2 guys managing thier land (using sponcers products). That was ok as a primis but it was not good tv. Compitition hunting is a bad primis.

There are many shows I like. For those of you with dish network check out The Men's Channel (218). There are some good shows there.

I will pretty much only watch the following shows:

Wildlife Obsession- Drury boys
The Wild Outdoors- Jay Gregory
Archers Choice- Ralph and Vickie
The Fever-.... Can't remember, but I like him
Closing the Distance- Same as above
North American Whitetail- Greg Miller, and support

I will watch Primos, Realtree, Mossy Oak, etc, but only if they are bowhunting whitetails in the Midwest or South....

Change the channel .... or better yet, get off the couch and go do something. ;)

When I do watch hunting shows, I like the Drury's.. Archer's Choice.. Realtree Roadtrips.. but my very favorite is the Outdoor Moments. They had an entire show dedicated to shooting woodchucks.. I loved it.

The worst hunting show is any show that features turkey hunting. (ugh)

Anyhow, you boys enjoy arguing over tv shows... I'll be out shooting stuff. (you should try it!)
:D

TXhighrack:Easy there big fella...I wasn't trying to personally attack you or your homestate. Its just, in my opinion, not real world hunting for most people across the country(outside of Texas) to havesix 10-pts. come in on every hunt or 15 longbeards come in gobbling at one time. I realize that it takes alot of planning, management, moneyand work to get your huntingup tothis level. I don't hunt public land, but you're right...most people around here would shot that 4-pt., however, times are changing and people are slowly stating to come around with the whole QDM thing. As for that 4-pt., I bet that hewould weigh about the same as one of your 6-yr. old"picket fenceon his head" bucks anyways :D.Just kidding. You just keep drinking your cup of tea and I'll keep drinking mine (although I'd much rather have a cold beer any day) and we'll leave it at that.

txhighrack, if u think that was a 11/2 year old...i think i would pass on having u do any management for me!;) and that is what is wrong with most of the show anymore, people only think about bigger and bigger bucks. and it is all about the $$$$ just as texas wants high fences, for the cash!
heres one for u, hunting is a (family heritage) when was the last time u seen some of these shows have a youngster do some hunting?or even a 3-4 min. spot on a pond catching blue gill? we all need to start making choices about gear, clothing, and other hunting items, from sponcers who promote hunting not just shooting the biggest deer! and buy from makers that help the hunting world not hurt it!
just my .02

You all should be happy you have multiple hunting shows to choose from on Outdoor Channel. I don't get it with my cable provider! :(

I only have OLN, which is sort of okay - as long as I don't watch that arrogant, pompous, Tred Barta show! [:@]

I also get TNN/Spike-TV - but it totally sucks, because they completely took off ALL hunting shows!! (maybe just in my area), but serious, they don't show ANY hunting at all. Nada. Zero!:(
