Trophy of a lifetime
Today, opener in KY, was the beginning of my 3rd year bowhunting. I had taken a couple shots but had neveer been quite good enough to keep the nerves down and put the shot where it needed to be. I went out hoping for some meat for the freezer. I seen 18 deer but only had a shot at one. I took the shot and it happened. MY FIRST DEER EVER WITH A BOW. It was a spike, but to me it was the largest deer I had ever seen. The adrenaline rush with the hunt and then the THANKS for being able to take such a fine animal, is more than any one person can imagine.
I know someone on here will think that a spike is just that, just a spike. But any animal that gives his/her life to me for the purpose of feeding my family, is more than just an animal. It is a creature with all my respect. Chris Sorry no pictures, I don't have the film developed yet. |

I say Congratulations on your first deer with a bow. There is definately something special about that first one and one to never be forgotten. I try to remember all the animals I've taken with a bow but none come so easy to my mind as my first doe and buck with my bow. Your buck is no doubt a trophy in my mind. Thanks for sharing and hurry with the pics.!!!! Good Luck and Good Shooting Rob |

Congrats on you're first buck. Bowhunting is great isn't it. Nothing like the rush of having deer so close you can't look them in the eye. Hope you get many more....Fletch

RE: Trophy of a lifetime
way to go chris! now you're really hooked for life. there's something a little more special about your first deer with a bow compared to your first with a rifle. it's nice to see hunters proud of a deer and not pope and young points all the time. keep up the good work.
GOOD LUCK HUNTING! :) |
RE: Trophy of a lifetime
Congratulations Chris, You will never forget that hunt as long as you live. I just got my first bow buck last year after two years of bowhunting. It was a young 8 pointer. I was never so thrilled in my life.I've gotten alot of deer in my day and bigger ones too with a rifle but there is no comparison. I'll never forget that hunt. It was a huge deal just to be successful on a bowhunt.

RE: Trophy of a lifetime
Congratulations, that's awesome. You're first deer with a bow is a big accomplishment. Many more to come.

RE: Trophy of a lifetime
Congratulations!! There is nothing better than taking a deer with your bow, and there is no such thing as just a spike! That deer will nourish your body the same way someone else's "trophy" will. In fact, he will be much more tender and should be enjoyed by all. Great job, and good luck in the future!!

RE: Trophy of a lifetime

RE: Trophy of a lifetime
I Know exactly what you mean about not placing the shot in the right place. I hunted squirell as a teenager, and started Deer hunting as an adult at about age 24. I hunted for 5 years, with rifle, shotgun, and Bow. Bow became my passion. I have never killed a deer. I have screwed up some really good shots. Don't know how I have managed, but I have. 5 years ago, I tore my shoulder to hell and couldn't draw a bow any more, so I quit hunting. This year I have a crossbow permit. I'm going back into the woods for the first time in 5 years. I'll gladly take that spike, or a doe.
Congrats. David |
RE: Trophy of a lifetime
your first deer with a bow is a trophy no matter what it is,congrats on a job well done.

RE: Trophy of a lifetime
Hey Chris, CONGRATS OF YOUR FIRST BOW KILL, any kill with a bow is a great acheivement and you should be proud of it. I myself have not had much success with my bow on anything but spikes and does, the big one just never seems to come close enough, however I keep hunting knowing one day it will pay off big with my bow.

RE: Trophy of a lifetime
The story.
I had planned to hunt all day. Got to the land I hunt and had forgot the drinks and gum to curb the nic fits(smoker). Plus it was raining like pouring it out of a boot. So, I took a nap intil 6:30 and then it was just sprinkling. When I got to my stand, there were 8 deer right under it. I know, should have been there already. Anyway, they left about 15 minutes after I got there. Had 2 deer come in from behind me, and I guess they seen the glare from my glasses and they ran off. That was about 8:30. Seen 4 more around 12 then about 4:30 4:45 the spike and a doe came in and started feeding. The doe stayed out about 50 yards and the spike walked within 10 but don't like the shots straight down so I waited. When he got 20 yards and quartering away, I let it fly. A double lung hit that let him go @30-35 yards and it was over except the work. He is by far the heaviest deer I had taken. I had the pleasure of a 7 pt in GA but he field dressed at 67 lbs and he was taken with a shotgun.(No rifles on military bases). I seen a total of 18 deer in 10+ hours and had the hunt of a lifetime to remember. One more thing. Thanks for all the advice from you guys and gals on here. Without your help, my hunt might have went diffreently. Chris |
RE: Trophy of a lifetime
Congradulations on the spike and your first kill. I remember mine well and everytime I look at him I relive that day. It took me seven years to bag my first.

Chris your topic title says it all!!!! Congrats on your trophy of a lifetime, I have killed a lot of deer over the years with gun, but I will honestly tell you that when I get my first with a bow, I do not care if it is a doe, a spike or a 12 pointer, it will be my Trophy of a life time!!!!!!

Chris, CONGRATS !!!! It took me 5 seasons of bow hunting to get my first bow kill. And I remember everything about that morning like it was yesterday. Please do the same. Document it if you have to. I taped the document of that days event to the back of my small antler mount. I refer to it before and during every season. AND YOUR'S IS A TROPHY !!!!
